A good MG historical fiction choice.

Elias is sent to an experimental consumption clinic in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, in 1843. Chafing at the confinement, he starts exploring the cave with the slaves who guide tours. As his health improves he becomes entangled in the mysteries of the cave and its inhabitants.

Elias realizes slaves are people, discovers another patient is not what he seems, and must decide who deserves loyalty.

ravenlee My only complaint is that the villain's demise is too quick and easy - nobody gets their hands dirty or has to make a hard decision. It seemed a little deus ex machina. 6y

Don't you hate it when you're going along, only half paying attention to chapter headings, and suddenly you realize they matter? Then you have to go back through the chapters you've already read to find the ones you glossed over.

Yeah, I never do that either...

LoverofLit Yup or halfway through decide you need to go back through and read the quotes that preempted each chapter! 6y
ravenlee This one has stuff to follow, too - every few pages there's a word at the bottom, with the page number, and put together they form a poem. I actually went through for those first, but I'd been tipped off. My current read I don't know yet what the significance is.
