"Compelling, tragic, comic, tender and mystical... Combines the historical significance of Kathryn Stockett's The Help with the wisdom of Toni Morrison's Beloved." Minneapolis Star Tribune Rich in mood and atmosphere, The Healing is a warmhearted novel about the unbreakable bonds between three generations of female healers and their power to restore the body, the spirit, and the soul. In Antebellum Mississippi, Granada Satterfield has the mixed fortune to be born on the same day that her plantation mistress's daughter, Becky, dies of cholera. Believing that the newborn possesses some of her daughter's spirit, the Mistress Amanda adopts Granada, dolling her up in Becky's dresses and giving her a special place in the family despite her husband's protests. But when The Master brings a woman named Polly Shine to help quell the debilitating plague that is sweeping through the slave quarters, Granada's life changes. For Polly sees something in the young girl, a spark of "The Healing," and a domestic battle of wills begins, one that will bring the two closer but that will ultimately lead to a great tragedy. And seventy-five years later, Granada, still living on the abandoned plantation long after slavery ended, must revive the buried memories before history repeats itself. Inspirational and suspenseful, The Healing is the kind of historical fiction readers cant put downand cant wait to recommend once theyve finished. "A remarkable rite-of-passage novel with an unforgettable character. . . . The Healing transcends any clichs of the genre with its captivating, at times almost lyrical, prose; its firm grasp of history; vivid scenes; and vital, fully realized people, particularly the slaves with their many shades of color and modes of survival." The Associated Press From the Hardcover edition.

An engrossing read that provides more insights into the horror that was slavery while simultaneously generating hope in humanity. Excellent.

I am completely hooked. I‘ll definitely reading this one straight through. This brilliance shows up already at page 8. Had to go back and experience it again.

This is a wonderfully told story. A gifted healer shares her story of slavery with a troubled girl who she is caring for. Filled with beautiful metaphors and symbolism.

I loved this book - with all the heartache, anger, unrest and bittersweet joy it inspired. There is rich history involving childbirth rituals on the plantation and the midwives roles. In the audio version the author included his interview with a 90 year old midwife who shared about her struggles and triumphs in the role. This was absolutely my favorite part - bringing me to both laughter and tears!

Mcoun Reading this right now. 7y

This was the most surprising read of 2016 for me. It's a slave narrative that resembles no other that I've read. The story will grip you and the characters are so developed that they jump off the page. It's obvious that Jonathan Odell was preoccupied by the authenticity of this story, which I gravely appreciated.#readsoullit #thehealing #jonathanodell

Nute I'm happy to see someone else enjoying this story. I feel that it is very under-read. It was the storytelling for me, the voice of the characters...it was so authentic and there was so much attention to detail, I felt like a ghost hovering just above every scene. 8y
BrownGirlReading Exactly! I tried to plug this one to death in my YouTube video. Odell really did that. I'm not sure how this one went under the radar because it is such a wonderful story. 8y
Buddys_Momma I read this book and absolutely loved it. I agree that this did not receive the attention that it should have. The story is phenomenal and Odell is a gifted author. 8y
BrownGirlReading @Buddys_Momma so under-hyped but so well told. 7y

After a rocky start, the blue skies and sunny warm weather helped to lure me into this compelling story. I'm about 100 pages in and completely invested. The story weaves between three women, all slaves and all possess the gift of healing. Strong writing and good character development #biblioweekend

Looking for some book recommendations to suggest to my book club. We are an interesting mix of ladies, all expats ranging in age from 35 - 55. We read all genres only requirement is that books are available as an EBook and in paperback format. Would really appreciate the fabulous Litsy community's eclectic taste and brain power❣The Healing by Jonathan Odell is our September selection.

Matilda My first thought. 8y

Cinfhen @Matilda @Notafraidofwords THANK YOU!!! A few of your suggestions we've read (and mostly enjoyed...there is ALWAYS one in the group LOL who has what to say😜) and the others I'm gonna check out now. Much appreciation for your suggestions💜 8y

Cinfhen @mhillis @LiteraryinLititz Love the suggestions...we read Let the Great World Spin, which was a total hit and I'm intrigued by Good Shufu...I'm pretty sure a lot of the girls in book club will find the subject matter VERY relevant. The Forgetting Time has been on my TBR so this may be a good time to think about reading it💕 8y
BookFreakOut Saw someone did a similar title, but I couldn't resist! My mom's book club actually really liked it, so I'm not just recommending it for the title. 8y
Cinfhen @BookFreakOut thanks for the suggestions, We read the EXPATRIATES but not the Expats (which sounds intriguing)😃 8y
