The Hopefuls
The Hopefuls: A novel | Jennifer Close
A brilliantly funny novel about ambition and marriage from the best selling author of Girls in White Dresses, The Hopefulstells the story of a young wife who follows her husband and his political dreams to D.C., a city of idealism, gossip, and complicated friendships among young Washington's aspiring elite. When Beth arrives in Washington, D.C., she hates everything about it: the confusing traffic circles, the ubiquitous Ann Taylor suits, the humidity that descends each summer. At dinner parties, guests compare their security clearance levels. They leave their BlackBerrys on the table. They speak in acronyms. And once they realize Beth doesn't work in politics, they smile blandly and turn away. Soon Beth and her husband, Matt, meet a charismatic White House staffer named Jimmy and his wife, Ashleigh, and the four become inseparable, coordinating brunch, birthdays, and long weekends away. But as Jimmy's star rises higher and higher, their friendship--and Beth's relationship with Matt--is threatened by jealousy, competition and rumors. A glorious send-up of young D.C. and a blazingly honest portrait of a marriage, this is the finest work yet by one of our most beloved writers. From the Hardcover edition.

There were elements of this book that I enjoyed but some of the characters, not so much. So whiny and entitled! If I hadn‘t been listening to it on audio cds from the library I suspect I would‘ve bailed.

The way this book is describe, and with the first person narrator I kept waiting for something bad to happen. And nothing really does. It is an interesting take on politics and the toll that campaigns have on couples. The beginning had me wanting to rewatch The West Wong!

This book was just ok. I felt it dragged too much in parts and could‘ve been cut down a bit. I did find the characters and their relationships - especially the marriages - felt real and had moments they were relatable. Overall, a bit fluffy and long-winded, unfortunately. 😕

These are just a few of favorite book covers for Day 4 of #readingresolutions - #coverlove ! I like them all separately for different reasons. The Italian Teacher and The Immortalists are colorful; The Hopefuls is effortlessly pretty; the arc of A Place For Us is elegant; and The #arc of When the Lights Go Out is PURPLE 💜 (and I own very few purple books)!! 💜 #TBR

Which cover is your favorite? Have you read any of these?

valeriegeary I've read The Immortalists and ❤️❤️❤️❤️! That cover is 👍 too. 2y
TracyReadsBooks The Italian Teacher has a great cover but I love the cover for The Immortalists which I read last year (got my hands on an ARC). Such a great book and one I‘ve recommended to many people. Definitely recommended! 2y

I enjoyed this but it was not what I expected. This book had been on my tbr since it came out but I considered taking it off recently due to the number of moderate to bad reviews I had seen. The main criticism I saw was that the “characters were unlikable”. I disagree. I saw a couple that was young and still figuring things out under a lot of stress and when people (or jobs) don‘t turn out the way you think they will. It was good, not great.

Day 18: Book set in your country #novinbooks17
The Hopefuls is a contemporary fiction novel that is full of drama, romance and takes place in DC during the Obama campaign. I sometimes enjoy politics so that‘s why I was interested in the book but it was okay. Too much romance drama for me.

Love this. It‘s so true. Friendships end and can be just as sad and devastating as a romantic relationship but others don‘t give them the same weight.

AmyG I have mourned the ending of some friendships. Distance has been an issue with some. Mostly it's just growing apart....kids, changing interests. These days....politics. ;) 2y
Conservio I'm mourning a friendship that died :/. It's really been over for years, but it still makes me sad. 2y

I couldn't put this book down! An interesting look at what home is in a town and business where no one is from D.C. And doesn't stay long. Beth longs for a place to belong and believes she has found that with the Dillons. The closer she becomes to them though the further away she becomes from her husband.

I'm not sure why there is hate for this book (ahem, @emilyhaldi ). I loved it! The political aspect was fun and I thought the inclusion of Obama as a character was very interesting. I wish the author had included more scenes with Matt's family, because they really had me laughing! I thought this was an honest portrayal about how relationships can fall apart, and how those closest to us can suddenly feel like strangers.

KarenUK So behind... very distracted today... but I'm about 120 pages in and loving it... @Reviewsbylola @Cinfhen 2y

emilyhaldi Ha! I'm glad you liked it more than me. It just got tired at some point and I was bothered by the vacuous dialogue 😏 2y

LitHousewife I'm with @emilyhaldi, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. When the main character made fun of crafting, I said, "Peace out." ? 2y
BethFishReads See, I liked it too 2y
Cinfhen Ok you two smarty pants sisters, I had to look up the word vacuous and I'm with Steph...in this case vacuous dialogue is my jam too????and I thought Beth was pretty witty and on point @emilyhaldi and to clarify @LitHousewife the author only mocked "stamping "as a craft form ?? 2y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @LitHousewife @Cinfhen All your comments made me smile and stack the book! 2y
Cinfhen Yay @BarbaraBB it was a fun read! Be prepared for the #vacuousdialogue 😘 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen 😂😂 2y
Reviewsbylola Lol, I didn't love Beth. I felt that a lot of her observations were on point, but it annoyed me that she was so willing to have her own opinions go unheard. The way she acted around everyone was so meek and unassuming, and it didn't do her any favors in my book. But still, that didn't make me like the book any less. Just didn't make me like her all that much. 😂 @Cinfhen 2y
mrozzz I'm with @emilyhaldi on this one 2y
emilyhaldi Yesssss @mrozzz we've got someone on #teamemily ! Finally 😂 2y
mrozzz Yeah!! 🤘🏻 @emilyhaldi I really wanted to like this one (because of the politics) but I just didn't like the characters. I'd also just read The Futures and found the premise so similar but not as successful. 2y
Reviewsbylola I do agree that I didn't actually like any of the characters. It's odd for me--I can't really pinpoint what it is about some unlikeable characters that totally can turn me off of a book, whereas sometimes, like here, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the novel. I think that with this one, I liked certain aspects about the characters, and what I didn't like were qualities that were very realistic and not over the top. @emilyhaldi @mrozzz 2y
Reviewsbylola It's almost like I could understand the poor parts of their personalities. And I think they all were good people deep down, but the stress of the men's career paths, coupled with other stressors like moving and a new baby, made me empathize with them and understand their bad behavior, even if I also wanted to shake them. @emilyhaldi @mrozzz 2y
mrozzz That's fair! 2y
Cinfhen I kind of liked Jimmy 🙄even though he was a #douchewad and I felt bad for Beth, she was trying to be supportive of her man, I didn't see her as weak @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @mrozzz (edited) 2y
Reviewsbylola I didn't see her as weak but I also think she could have made an effort to assert herself. She let things go on way too long without saying something to Matt and having a heart to heart. BUT I could also see how it happened because the situation was an odd one and I think for her (and him as well), hindsight is 20/20. And Jimmy was my favorite. 😂😂 @Cinfhen 2y
Cinfhen I always fall for those type of guys @reviewsbylola 😉😂😬who doesn't love a little Jimmy every now and then!?!? 2y
Cinfhen And I agree with your observations 2y
Reviewsbylola That type of charisma is hard to resist. But actually being married to him is a different story! @Cinfhen I think Jennifer Close needs to write a sequel from Ash and Jimmy's perspective, but maybe a couple of years down the line. Like say when Viv is 5. 2y
Cinfhen Yes!!!! I would love that @Reviewsbylola and I'd like a book about Matt's family...those sister in laws were hilarious 💕 2y

Cortg I just finished Killers of the Flower Moon, best NF book of the year, I loved it. I read A Gentleman in Moscow over the summer which is beautifully written, slower paced but pretty good. Definitely different in a good way. And Angela's Ashes. I'm a sucker for Irish stories. This was fantastic. It was sad and heart wrenching at times, a little slow at times but really good. I love a good memoir. All of them were excellent, in my opinion. (edited) 2y

Recently started the audiobook. Funny stuff & the narrator's voice is great so far. I hope the main character stops constantly badmouthing DC in comparison to Manhattan at some point, though! I've lived in both & they both have their strengths.

Pickpick

The first part of the book in Washington DC was enjoyable, light and funny. I loved reading about the Obama campaigns, the dinners, parties and balls. I thought the whole book was going to be about politics in DC. It was really about the marriages of Matt and Beth and Jimmy and Ashleigh and the couples" friendship so it became a downer. Still it held my interest and even though it was hard to like these people I wanted to see how they'd end up.

Hoping to finish this tonight. It has some of the most awful characters I've come across in recent memory and I almost gave up on it a couple of times because of that but I have also enjoyed the writing so I stuck with it. Happy to almost be done though! And I still love the cover.

bookandcat I was reading this in the days before the election and was enjoying it but after the election couldn't finish it because I couldn't read about politics anymore. Hopefully one day I'll go back to it! 2y
Rachellynnwright I finally found another litten from LA! I used to live in Hollywood but moved to Sherman Oaks:) 2y

The last two books I've read have centered around an inside view of Washington, D.C. While I had mixed feelings about both of these books, it is a subject that I find fascinating.

This book is the literary equivalent of a mimosa. It's bubbly and light and I can't get enough of it. It's so compulsively readable but not nearly as heavy as the past few books I've read. It's basically the perfect distraction.

Traveling in Austria for a week ? We did some gorgeous hiking & swimming in lakes.. but my husband makes sure I get hours of reading almost every day - he knows me so well... and also knows it's for his own best ? this is in a coffeehouse in dreamy Salzburg ?
Wrapping up The Hopefuls!
So much for @MrBook 's bookish question of the day - reading in a Café is one of my top favorite things in the whole world ?

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Sounds like a great day 😊 2y

Stretch for #BooksInTheWild #Riotgrams, but is there anything wilder than DC these days? This fun & moving story begins with reminiscing about Obama's campaign.

My Iowa story is about Bill Clinton's first run bus tour. My teen daughter & I got a spot on the ropes. As Bill approached, I stepped back to get a pic of my daughter shaking his hand. I had the camera on telephoto. All I got was a super close-up of his tie! Thanks for the rec @KarenUK

Ashley_Nicoletto LOL. I live in Iowa! 3y
KarenUK @lynneamch glad you enjoyed it! 👍💕 3y
lynneamch Hi @Ashley_Nicoletto . I lived in Iowa for 30 years; now in Tennessee. It was so engaging to be a part of the political process and get to meet the candidates & spouses. I miss that, but not the cold and snow. 😊 3y

I was 90 percent sure "the United States of Spinning" was never a real thing. But Drake and I did have to Google it, just to be safe.

And the eye rolls continue: "In New York, you could live years without running into someone you knew, but DC was different. It was smaller...Sometimes it didn't feel like a real city at all." The author is just plagiarizing YouTube videos at this point (45 second mark): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FuPwy77scvw.

I'm only 15 pages in and rolling my eyes at the narrator so hard my ocular muscles might spasm and reject my eyeballs. Nora Ephron already did the whole "Poor NYC wife has to move to DC for her husband and hates it" story, and she did it better.

...Still, "I hated that all women looked like they'd just left an Ann Taylor store (and I hated that most likely, they probably had)" IS my internal monologue most weekday mornings in DC. Well played.

Reviewsbylola Not gonna lie, totally got this because of the reviews and cover. 😬 3y
schmia But she is totally wrong about all women in DC commuting in sneakers. That's nonsense. In Dupont (where this narrator is supposedly living), on the morning commute, it's nothing but Tory Burch flats as far as the eye can see. 3y
schmia @Reviewsbylola I'm sticking with it, because I'm as down for mockery of D.C. as the next person. I just wish the narrator were from literally anywhere but NYC. "New Yorker thinks DC is not as cool as NYC" is just such a trite storyline at this point, right? 3y

emilyhaldi Lol at the quote and your additional observations @schmia 😂 3y
schmia @emilyhaldi Thanks -- as the beer bottle in the photo might also suggest, I felt like venting! :) 3y
erinreads I was definitely annoyed by page 15 as well! Happy to see another person from DC! 👋🏻 3y
schmia @erinreads Yes! I saw your comment on the book and thought, "I must follow this person!" I am enjoying it overall so far, but ugh, this narrator is so annoying. Which I'm normally fine with when I read a book, as long as I get the sense that the author wants me to see the narrator as a flawed human being. The problem is that I'm well into this book and not getting that sense. I think I'm supposed to sympathize with her and I really don't. 3y
erinreads @schmia Oh, I 100% hated all of the characters by the end of it, especially Beth. I'm pretty sure I gave it a so-so rating just because it was fun to read so many familiar DC places in a novel... but then again, I also critiqued all the logistics, so it'll probably be a book I'm never revisit. 3y

Mehso-so

This book was a solid 3 stars. I didn't feel particularly compelled to keep going, but I didn't dislike it. I might have DNF'd if this were print, but I love Jorjeana Marie and stuck with this one for her narration. Overall, this is one that I'm not sure why I picked it up, so it's more my fault than the book's fault that I didn't click with it.
