I would do an activity by giving a piece of paper to each student and letting them make something out of it. Then telling them to change it into something else until there was nothing less. After this, I would have the students write about their experiences.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback, 1999 Caldecott winner. The imagery is very colorful and brings joy to the book. The words are also limited per page focusing on illustrations and the details within them and it is kind of like finding different pictures and figures per page.

I have not read many children's books about repurposing items! I like the message this can send to children, especially since we live in a time of a lot of unnecessary waste.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback showcases how creativity and innovation can extended the life of something "old and worn". It can be read to teach about imagination and sustainability. The book has interesting cutouts, so Joseph's clothing transitions to its next purpose as the reader turns the page.

I loved that this book also shows how you can reuse clothing which could inspire the reuse of other items. Like yogurt containers or shopping bags.

I love this book as the pages are cut out and it engages the reader more. It helps the reader to be more excited to read the book.

This story would be an amazing work to look at when speaking on illustrations and mixed media in an art class. While the book itself is illustrations it has such cool holes that would be a goof topic of how mixed art works together to create on piece. A lesson on scrapbooking and layering would work well.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat written by Simms Back won the Caldecott in 2000. This book has a beautiful almost pop out media in which there are intricate holes presented. The story itself follows the day of Joseph and his endeavors in cutting and sewing. But the media alone tells the story of the fabric.

This was a great story and this quote highlighted the message of the story that you can always make something out of nothing.

This book had a good lesson throughout the story and it was an exciting read for children having the cut out in each page. this book taught children the importance of recycling and that everything can be reused and refurbished into something new.

This was a very good book for children! It was a fun read and it was exciting how there was a cut out of each page that followed onto the next. It made the book for inviting and entertaining to read.

This is a great book because it shows how to adapt and overcome for certain situations.

1999- The Caldecott Medal
The pictures in the illustrations shown are very realistic. There are some parts of the illustrations where a realistic picture is placed and there are some parts that look drawn and colored with pencils and crayons/colored pencils. There are many different patterns and textures shown in pictures to show contrast and uniqueness. There are pages with cut-out shapes to utilize the patterns from one page to the next.

Shows the creativity that the main character has. All of the small imagery is so fun to search through on each page.

Published in 1999. A story about turning old, used things into something new . I loved the way there was a cutout in pages so the old and worn item really did turn into the next item Jospeh made. There were also small images with details to look for on each page (letters, paintings, newspapers, etc).

I enjoyed all the colors on the book to compensate for the lack of words. The cut outs in the book was also a fun way to change up the illustrations.
The book was about how a man named Joseph had an old vest, but even when it was deteriorating, he was still able to make it into something else.
My favorite quote was, “Now he has nothing. So Joseph made a book about it. Which shows... you can always make something out of nothing.“

This book follows joseph as he makes his old and worn coat into many new things. It gives a great message of finding new ways to love old things. Joseph doesn‘t get sad when his items get worn, but rather uses it to make something new.

I like this book because it‘s an easy read and the art is really cool. The pattern of the cost continues through the whole book and there are different shapes each time his clothing changes so it would be a fun guessing game for the kids. Also, it encourages repurposing things and never taking anything for granted.

I remember being in Elementary this use to be one of my books and we would do such unique activties after we read the story. The story is about a Jewish Farmer who wore a striped overcoat and the farmer who use the material of the jacket to make other clothing items he may have needed. This story teaches children you can always make something out of nothing.

This book is an award winner because it received the Caldecott Medal. It was deserving of this award because you could actually see texture within the coat images, and the images exemplify the text.

I would use this book in my classroom because its images would really get the kids interacted, and it is a good book about recycling clothes you love.

This book is a Caldecott winner, and for good reason(pub.1977). It had beautiful illustrations and a nice rhythm throughout the story.
I think that it is very interactive with whomever may be listening to the story. It has a great flow and consistency to it and shares the importance of reusing items. Overall, I think that the message is one that not many people think about, but is great to put out there.

Teaches a good lesson to kids! Things can always be reused and just because something is kind of ruined doesn‘t mean it needs to be thrown away.
