This beautifully illustrated book is about a boy, Julian, who‘s in awe of the women dressed as mermaids on the train, so he decides he wants to be a mermaid too! His abuela supports his dream, helps finish his amazing mermaid costume, and walks alongside him in the parade. This book, Julian is a Mermaid, is a RF book written by Jessica Love and a Jane Addams award winner! A must have, to teach children how to truly be themselves! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This is a great RA for students, I hope to use this book in my future classroom to encourage students that it is okay to be different; that makes you YOU! ESOL strategy #1 can be incorporated when asking students question about the text as you read. UDL 2.1 can be used by defining the vocabulary used before starting the lesson! (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 This resource: https://assets2.hrc.org/welcoming-schools/documents/WS_Lesson_Julián_Is_a_Mer... is a super interesting link to addressing gender at an elementary school level. It provides lessons and activities to support inclusion in the classroom! 4y
LauraLeighn This looks like an insanely cute book! I love your description of it, it really sells the book. The lesson to “okay to be different; that makes you YOU!“ is so important especially in elementary school, I love your ESOL and UDL strategy, great post! 4y

RamzieM This looks like an amazing book choice! I think you paired your ESOL and UDL strategies for a read aloud. 4y
LibrarianRyan Its getting a sequel. Stay tuned for #coverlove #MGedition because i will have it in there later today. 4y
nquintus I love this book! It also won a Stonewall award for LGBTQ representation, so I agree that it would be a wonderful add to a diverse classroom library. Great choice, Emma! 4y
DrSpalding I agree this would be an excellent read aloud to emphasize the theme of being unique. Your universal design and English learner strategies work and your resource is a good one. I believe the sequel is about Julian going to a wedding. 4y

If you decide you want to go to the moon, this is a great book to teach you how to get there! If You Decide To Go To The Moon, written by Faith McNulty and illustrated by Stephen Kellogg is a (inter)stellar SF book choice. This book takes students on journey through space with an aspiring astronaut whose goal is to reach the moon; he learns some very important lessons along the way and scientific facts too! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This book is a great independent read for students who are interested in science fiction! This link: https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub/index.html is to NASA‘s children site and has so many great out of space games and interactive virtual lessons. ESOL strategy #46 the use of discovery learning through students virtual learning from NASA. UDL 6.3 aligns when students are using outside resources to seek information on a topic. 4y
LauraLeighn What an “(inter)stellar “ sounding book! This seems like a great book to give the student in your class whos dream is to be an astronaut! The resource being a NASA link is super smart, and I think your ESOL strategy lines up perfectly with this book. 4y
DrSpalding I love that you used NASA as a resource. I do not believe this is science fiction however I would have to read it again to be sure. English learner strategy 46 is just right. 4y

“She wouldn‘t trade for any other shade” This beautifully written book, Skin Like Mine, written by LaTisha M. Perry and illustrated by Bea Jackson, is a RF that truly celebrates diversity. This book illustrates wonderfully how you should love the skin you‘re in; my favorite line in the book was “because, we know it‘s what‘s inside that matters the most”. This is a great book for a class RA and a must have for your library. #ucflae3414

Emmaturtle3 ESOL strategy #22 can be used when asking questions about the text to students during RA. UDL 9.2 is a great guideline that can be used to process any personal struggles students have regarding the color of their skin, a tough yet super important conversation. 4y
Emmaturtle3 This link: https://scenicregional.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Stories-Matter-Book.pdf is an amazing resource for teachers. Your UDL stat works really well with this book, it would not be hard to find alternative ways for visual information. The Nutrition plan idea is so creative! This is a great way to tie this book in with a science/ health lesson 4y

Mazzole18 What a great book especially with all the debates going on over Mount Rushmore. UDL 3.1 seems like an excellent choice for creating prior knowledge about our nations past presidents. These look like great activities I like that your incorporated a writing activity. Nick 4y
DrSpalding This is a factual story about 41 of our presidents. The illustrations can throw you off however they are meant to intrigue young children while providing factual information about previous presidents. Your resource is a valuable one. August Pullman aka Auggie, is not just an ordinary middle schooler though, he is truly extraordinary; read this great novel to find out why! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 ESOL strategy #3 should be used when reading this book, Auggie‘s story can be used to help students think positively even life seems negative! UDL 7.2 is perfect for Wonder, and can be great to help students that they are valued for being themselves. 4y

“My father can read big words too. Like....Constantinople and Timbuktu!!” Hop on Pop is a fun P book by Theodore Geisel, a.k.a. the great Dr. Seuss! This book excites children to the max with it‘s fun illustrations, vocabulary, and most importantly the rhyming! I think this book would be great for an AS due to the fact that there are so many great Dr. Seuss books and lots of resources to find information! #ucflae3414

Emmaturtle3 This link: https://www.seussville.com/explore/ is home for all things Dr. Seuss! Students can most definitely use this resource to find tons of information about this author and all the books that he created. ESOL strategy #16 is used when students are integrating the reading and writing activity of an author study to this book. UDL 6.3 is used when students are researching and accessing information online. 4y
Mazzole18 Hop on Pop is a great story when building fluency and teaching student to learn to read. The rhyme and repetition make it fun and easy for students. It is also good for struggling readers to build confidence. Thanks for the resources to help incorporate the wonderful stories of Dr. Seuss in the classroom. 4y

Joseph once had a big overcoat, but now not so much! Joseph Had a Little Overcoat is Caldecott award winning RF written and illustrated by Simms Taback, about a man who teaches us that we can always make something out of nothing. This book is a uplifting and fun book that students will love, it is great for CR due to its repetition and simple language too! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/joseph-had-little-overcoat-sing-al... this is such a fun sing-along for students after reading this book!! UDL 8.4 can be used when asking questions to students about how the made something out of nothing in their own lives. 4y
DrSpalding This is traditional literature. Reading is fundamental is an excellent resource. The sing-along is engaging, motivating and an excellent complement to this story. Knowing that traditional literature was passed down by word-of-mouth, storytelling works well. 4y

Good night moon an MF book by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd has sold over 14 million copies, making it one of the best selling picture books of all time. This book is about a little rabbit and his bedtime routine: saying goodnight to everything in the great green room. It is the perfect S book because it is truly written to be a bedtime story and has great vocabulary and illustrations! #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef Hi Emma! You did an amazing job in class using this as S book :) I was so engaged and you included real props as you told it. For your post I would add ESOL strategy 29 and UDL principle 7.1 4y
ashleyshugars Hi Emma! I agree with Vivianne, this was super cute in class! You should add your Storytelling strategies for others to use as reference!! Super cute! I also think this book could be really cute as a RA for students dressed up in pajamas for a pajama day! (: 4y
CameoD Emma I loved the way you retold this story! You put so much effort in, down to the last detail, especially with the cute pj‘s! I loved it. I liked how you incorporated realia and used a soft tone to convey your message. You did an amazing job:) 4y
Emmaturtle3 https://www.myjoyfilledlife.com/goodnight-moon-story-time-activities/ a fun website filled with lots of fun crafts and educational activities, I found this great activity that incorporates vocabulary and pictures for students! ESOL Strategy #29 aligns well with this book with the use of materials for the S. As for UDL principles, 2.4 fits perfectly when doing because S and using props and visuals; promoting understanding across all languages! 4y
DrSpalding Storytelling using some of the fun craft activities would be a wise choice. You could also read this aloud in your primary classroom and have the children create the crafts to retell the story. 4y

The Cat in the Hat | Dr. Seuss
post image

This well-known P book written and illustrated by Theodore Geisel aka Dr. Seuss is a timeless classic that students love! The Cat in the Hat is about a crazy cat who pays a visit to Sally and Sam while their mother is out and he has a few tricks up his sleeve, but somehow this crazy cat ends up teaching the children a very important lesson. This is great book for PR and can be used in a lesson on poetry or a lesson about Dr. Seuss. #ucflae3414su30

Emmaturtle3 ESOL Strategy #32 works perfectly for PR with this book, students will be able to work together and learn from each other. UDL 9.1 can be used when explaining the expectations for the PR and the activities that they will be doing together. This link https://www.childsplayaz.org/download.php/schools/seuss-poetry-packet-schools was a great find. It helps students with poetry, identifying rhyming words and it also includes standards; super helpful! (edited) 4y
DrSpalding Not all books that rhyme are considered poetry. Knowing that the cat in the hat does things that are out of this world, this is better categorized as modern fantasy. 4y

The Good Egg | Jory John

The Good Egg by Jory John, illustrated by Pete Oswald is a New York Times Best Seller MF. This book tells a story of a very good egg who‘s always willing to lend a helping hand and stop any quarrels among the other eggs. The good egg is so busy trying to be good that he forgets to care for himself and begins to crack, the story carries on as he learns new ways to find balance between caring for himself while still being a good egg. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 https://www.mrsbremersclass.com/2019/06/the-good-egg.html?m=1 wow this is an awesome link to tons of activities and lessons for kindergartens regarding The Good Egg. These activities help teach students about Story elements text to self and text to text connections, AND has problem and solution activities! This will most definitely be a resource I use in my future classroom. 4y
Emmaturtle3 I think this book would be great for an RA. For ESOL strategies I would use #10 by having the students share with their partners how the text relates to themselves and how they can work on their own personal balance. For UDL I would focus on 3.2 by highlighting the big idea of self care and balance, I think this is an awesome skill to learn at such a young age. (edited) 4y

Orbis Pictus award winning NF book by Steve Jenkins, Actual Size is a picture book that contains the ACTUAL SIZE of a variety of different animals both big and small. This book also contains actual measurements of the animal or part of the animal. This book is super engaging for students with it fun pictures, yet super informative about math and science concepts. I think a RA would be the best way to showcase this awesome book. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This link: http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/readers_guides/pdfs/JenkinsGuide.pdf provides great resources about all Steve Jenkins books include Actual Size. The activity has students seeing what animals are smaller than their hand and it has students reflecting back to the text. 4y
Emmaturtle3 UDL 2.3 can be used by explaining the mathematical concepts in the text as well as making sure to decode the text. I could use ESOL Strategy #4, which is linking the lesson to prior knowledge, by asking the students questions about animals and their understanding of their sizes 4y
bsiqueira Emma, I really liked the webpage you provided! Having students compare their hands to the assignment is such a wonderful way to keep them intrigued and interacting. I think your UDL is perfect in a sense of this is a great book to use for a mathematical lesson when discussing their weight and size! Great post! 4y

Caldecott honors and Coretta Scott King award winning B book- Martin‘s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Brian Collier, is about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.. This B book tells his story of growing up in the midst of segregation and how the encouragement of his reverend father and the teachings of Gandhi sparked a desire to fight for justice in our nation. This fight was fought without violence and with love. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 I think that LCs would work best for this book. Students would be able to choose their own book from a variety of biographies or books about social injustice. Students would each be given a LC role to do while reading the book and would then share their thoughts and discoveries with their group. This promotes UDL 8.3 of fostering collaboration and community and ESOL strategy #2 falls into place as well 4y
Emmaturtle3 I also really loved this resource I found that has students choose their favorite quotes, describe what the quote means to them, and write about how the quote applies to themselves or to the world today. I think especially with what‘s going on in our world today this is a perfect activity to do with students and make text to self and text to world connections. https://createteachshare.com/2018/01/martins-big-words-for-big-kids.html 4y
bsiqueira Emma, what a powerful story this must be. A literature circle is a great idea because the students can really discuss with one another the importance of many aspects in the book. You‘re resource would be great to use because MLK had such powerful quotes. What a great book to use for a history lesson! 4y
DrSpalding Quotes are powerful. I like the resource as well and believe that selecting powerful quotes such as these could be an excellent part of a social studies lesson. English learner strategy 28 also works as it is providing biographies to students. 4y

Little Red Riding Hood | Trina Schart Hyman

A timeless classic and Caldecott Honor TL, Little Red Riding Hood by Trina Schart Hyman. Most children know this fairy tale about a young girl in red hood who travels through the woods to see her grandmother, expect something just doesn‘t seem right about her poor old grandmother, she seems to resemble a... wolf! With some twists and turns students will be at the edge of their seat to see what happens next. Perfect for S. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This link: https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/little-red-riding-hood-finger-puppets/ is to a little red riding finger puppet activity. This activity could pair perfectly with S (storytelling), the students would hold up their finger puppets as we read aloud the story. I saw this done in a class I volunteered with last year, they did it for the 3 little pigs and the students LOVED it! Will most definitely incorporate this into my future classroom. 4y
Emmaturtle3 ESOL Strategy #17 I can provide contextual support to my students through storytelling as well as modeling using the finger puppets we made. UDL 1.1 can be used by offering a different display of information through the hands-on creation of the puppets used during the story. 4y
CameoD I love this classic story!! The Esol strategies and UDL you paired with it are perfect :) 4y

Emmaturtle3 This book is great for a classroom RA. UDL 7.2 can be used for this RA due to its cultural relevance, age appropriateness, and being appropriate for different racial and ethnic groups. ESOL Strategy #5 can be used along side the vocabulary activities in the work book in the link above, vocabulary will be highlighted prior to the read aloud. (edited) 4y

This book is just as the title says it is, remarkable! The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise a RF novel by Dan Gemeinhart, is a heartwarming story about a 12-year-old girl (who goes by Coyote), her father (who she calls Rodeo) and their journey in the big yellow bus. The book takes place 5 years after Coyote‘s mother passed away and goes into detail of their journey all across the states and back to where they once called home. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 I think this a great book for LCs, the students will be given their selected roles and will switch out after every few chapters. This book is perfect for upper elementary school aged students and I think they will really be able to connect to the text and maybe do some text to self connections and reflections based on the struggles coyote goes through. (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 ESOL strategy #2 can be implemented during Lit Circles when the students are in their small groups sharing and discussing the information they gathered from their personal reading. UDL 8.3 similar to ESOL strategy #2, the Lit Circles with this book promote collaboration and community among the students by them respectfully listening and sharing with one another. 4y
Emmaturtle3 This link: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.yayomg.com/the-remarkable-journey-of-coyote-sun... provides fun facts for the students to learn about the book and help them discover more about the characters! 4y

Inch by Inch is a SF Caldecott Honor award winning book by Leo Leonni that tells an encouraging story while also teaching students about a variety of different birds including their names, sizes, location, and what they eat. This is a great book for a RA and can most definitely be used as an introduction to a math lesson or science lesson! #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This pdf: https://www.gpidea.org/document_center/download/ecems-info-briefs/Literacy_Inch-... is a great resource that includes how to integrate science, math AND literacy into activities and lessons about this book! My favorite activity is the one where students create a 1 inch green worm out of ribbon or construction paper and measure things around the classroom. This helps students to get up and moving while learning about math! (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 UDL 3.2 can be used during the RA by asking questions that help students determine key details, ideas and patterns in the text.
ESOL Strategy #2 can be used to have students go into small groups to discuss parts of the text as well as creating their worms and measuring the classroom together!
(edited) 4y
DrSpalding Remember that just because something may have a science theme, this does not mean it is science fiction. This is actually a fable written by the author. This would then be categorized as traditional literature. Read aloud and of course math activities work well. I have used this in my classroom with first graders. 4y

This three-time award winning (Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King) book by Matt De La Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson is RF and tells a story of a young boy named CJ and his Nana who ride the bus together. Throughout the book Cj is constantly asking his Nana why he doesn‘t have things other people have, his Nana turns his negative views of the things he lacks into a beautiful perspective of what he does have. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This book is great for RA because of the inspiring story it tells and the beautiful illustrations on each page, because it is a picture book. As for UDL I would say 7.2 and 3.2 are ones that this book highlights; Optimize relevance, value and authenticity and highlights patterns, critical features, big ideas and relationships. I think this book can help students understand their value, how to be authentic and learn more about family relationships. (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 For ESOL strategies I think that #3 and #4 would be best fit. #3 being: Encourage self talk (positive thinking) and #4 being: Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. This book can help to show students the positives in situations and how to promote positive thinking and self talk. I also think students can use prior knowledge of their family situations to relate to the characters in the book. 4y
Emmaturtle3 http://www.carolhurst.com/titles/laststoponmarket.html This awesome website provides a ton of resources from a summary, to themes, to standards, and to activities! The UDL strategies you chose will definitely focus on the big ideas and relationships within the story between CJ and his Nana. Students within the class will know how important it is to think positively. 4y
DrSpalding Emma, you found a fabulous resource… Be sure to expand on what it shares that can assist the teacher with using it in the classroom. Excellent job identifying universal design and English learner strategies. You have several however only one is required, of each. Your summary is spot on and certainly this book does provide a new perspective! 4y
