America City
America City | Chris Beckett

America, one century on: a warmer climate is causing vast movements of people. Droughts, floods and hurricanes force entire populations to simply abandon their homes. Tensions are mounting between north and south, and some northern states are threatening to close their borders against homeless fellow-Americans from the south. Against this backdrop, an ambitious young British-born publicist, Holly Peacock, meets a new client, the charismatic Senator Slaymaker, a politician whose sole mission is to keep America together, reconfiguring the entire country in order to meet the challenge of the new climate realities as a single, united nation. When he runs for President, Holly becomes his right hand woman, doing battle on the whisperstream, where stories are everything and truth counts for little. But can they bring America together - or have they set the country on a new, but equally devastating, path?

laurieluna Glad it arrived safe! Wanted to send you all something extra but with the weather and illness I couldn't get out to find things! I really enjoyed this book, hope you do to 😊 7y
Leniverse Hope you feel better! I'm not sure the current weather is an improvement... We have Rain with a capital R here now. But at least the mail gets delivered! 7y

I have to keep rearranging my shelves to make space. Started a #readersfirst section.
America City was fantastic, 5/5🌟. A very scary read though, a bit too close to reality! If you like hard hitting, close to the bone Science Fiction, I recommend this.

TrishB Was scary because it rang so true! 7y
laurieluna @TrishB it did. It read more like a prediction than a work of fiction. 7y
Balibee146 Another one that looked great but I missed it. Like the shelfie 😍 7y

A tea of tricolore pasta in cheese sauce with salmon fish cakes (just the pasta and sauce for the fussy 2 year old) and a continuation of this book. One of the main characters is currently having a moral dilemma which I'm finding really interesting reading as the opinions mirror those of a lot of people in todays society. #bookandfood

Moving on quickly to cleanse the awful dialogue of the last book from my mind. Read good things from other #readersfirst winners about this one!

Won this to review for #readersfirst
100 years in the future, the east coast of the US is disappearing under a series of hurricanes, there is a massive drought in the dust bowl and people are being moved to north america/canadian border and feel like refugees in their own country.
Won't say anymore that may give story away but very current and interesting, though scary read!

LeahBergen Intriguing! 7y
batsy That does sound fascinating and maybe all too possible at the rate things are going 😟 7y
Izai.Amorim I think that I‘ll this one next. 7y

Cathythoughts Sounds so possible, scarey stuff. I'm stacking. 👍 7y
Balibee146 Sounds excellent. So many fantastic apocalyptic books and films around (new Blade Runner is fab!!) I'm really beginning to worry our collective subconscious is screaming at us..... 7y
TrishB @LeahBergen @batsy @Izai.Amorim @Cathythoughts @Balibee146 the political decision making/spinning is heart breaking and I suspect very real 😔 7y
minkyb Sounds like non-fiction! 7y
TrishB @minkyb it was very believeable!! 7y

This week I'll be receiving a copy of America City from #readersfirst. I'm a bit apprehensive about this read, as the subject matter is startlingly close to our current reality, but I'm willing to give it a go. Anyone else receiving a copy? I'm planning on starting The Hanging Girl this weekend too.

TrishB I got this one too 👍 7y
laurieluna @TrishB 👍 going to try and clear some of my current reads this week, and read The Hanging Girl over the weekend so I have more time for this when it arrives. 7y

laurieluna @bookworm76 it's a UK based website called readers first. You review an opening chapter of a book, they enter you into a draw to win it. All they ask is that you read and fully review it before it's due for publication if possible. X 7y
Ms_T Bravo! 7y
emily_m_tubb I'm hoping to start The Hanging Girl this weekend too! I've just won a copy of "36 questions"... Fancied something a little lighter after all the crime I've been reading ? 7y
laurieluna @emily_m_tubb I usually avoid 'political' reads like the plague but I thought I'd give this one a go. The only other recent topical read was Home Fire, which I enjoyed. Litsy is helping to push me out of my comfort zone. I've never read a crime thriller either! 7y
laurieluna @emily_m_tubb I'll post up once I start The Hanging Girl and try to post regular updates under the #readersfirst hashtag 😊 x 7y
emily_m_tubb @miralunasbooknook Sounds great! Will be good to do a readers first buddy/group read! 😁 7y
laurieluna @emily_m_tubb that's what I'm hoping to achieve 😄 7y
Sophoclessweetheart I have the Hanging girl too but this one didn‘t sound like something for me x 7y
Sophoclessweetheart Though!! I read Dark Eden by this author and WOW! C 7y
laurieluna @Noonlightreader if I enjoy this I mighy give that a go! This isn't my usual kind of read but I'm trying to break out of my fantasy bubble. X 7y
