This collection of Wilchins' writings is provocative and thought-provoking. I felt like everything I thought I believed was being turned inside out and back again. Also, Wilchins seems to be speaking to the queer community, which felt like a big hug. 💙 I recently read Serano's WHIPPING GIRL, and this was a perfect follow-up book for working through concepts that were still spinning their wheels in my mind. Love the hopefulness of this book, too!

"This instinct to control bodies, genders, and desires, may be as close as we have to a universal constant. It is common to culture rich and poor, left-wing and right-wing, Eastern and Western."

"And please don‘t tell me we‘re going to resuscitate the term [transgender] so that I can inhabit it with comfort and newfound pride. I am not interested in taking up residence in forced housing no matter how nicely it‘s dressed up for the occasion. I‘m also not interested in the “freedom” to self-identify within a host of ready-made, off-the-rack social constructs."

"At the time, [trans people] were happy just to be mentioned, regardless of what we were called. We were the identity that didn‘t speak its name."
