I'm Glad My Mom Died | Jennette McCurdy
post image

If you‘re on Instagram, do yourself a favor and watch the reel Ann posted today. I‘ve read over 200 memoirs in the past two years, and what she said about them often being about one big event and not having much story development other than that, I‘ve found is quite true. She gave words to why I wasn‘t impressed by McCurdy‘s book (tagged ⬆️) and many others.

The book she recommends (tagged ⬇️) is on my shopping list at Parnassus next month!

Megabooks This is the one she recommends, and since I gave 5⭐️ to Danticat‘s short story collection, I‘m excited to read it! (edited) 1w
Megabooks The reel is under the Parnassus Books account. 👍🏻 1w
Cinfhen Ohhh, another book for #NonFictionNovember 1w

BarbaraBB Thanks for sharing this. I loved (edited) 1w
BarbaraBB … So I am more than willing to read another Danticat! 1w
Megabooks @Cinfhen 💯💯💯!! 1w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I know! We both loved that one. I‘ll let you know about the memoir! 1w
Hooked_on_books I heard Ann on a podcast not long ago and she doesn‘t mince words! 😂 I was initially a little startled, since I‘m so used to people with media training making efforts to smooth everything over, but then I realized I really appreciated her blunt candor. 1w
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books she doesn‘t. I feel like she is more firm in her opinions but isn‘t rude about it. Parnassus has some interesting content on Instagram, but these she posts on Friday about backlist titles are my favorite. She give her reasons behind like and dislike, and I really appreciate that! 1w

Nina is just fantastic, and this book about her friendship with RBG (and other women) was lovely. She also wrote about the difficulty climbing the ladder as a woman in the 1970s and how friendships with women like RBG and Cokie Roberts got her through. She gave interesting insights into the court and its other justices, too. Great reflections on a life well lived. Still missing you RBG!! 😢

actualdisneyprincess This is next on my library pile after Mercury Pictures Presents!!!! 😍😭 2w
Megabooks @actualdisneyprincess enjoy!!! (edited) 2w
JenReadsAlot I can always count on you for finding me great NF reads! 2w

Cinfhen It‘s on #Scribd so maybe for #NonFictionNovember 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I think it would be a GREAT choice for then! 2w

Trapped on Treasure Island | Floyd Gottfredson
post image

Your cruise ship goes down, and your suitcase full of books goes down with it. You survive, you make it to an island, but not all your books make it with you. Only FIVE books survive the ordeal. Which books make it to the island with you? Join us in the Trapped On An Island challenge to find out.

To join, create a Goodreads shelf called "Trapped on an Island" and post a link to your shelf here. ⬇️

aperfectmjk You will be paired with someone who will pick 5 books from your shelf. Each person will then post a pic with their selections for the other person. 3mo
aperfectmjk @HeathHof @Pigpen_Reads @TheAromaofBooks Don't forget to post a link to your goodreads shelves! 😉 3mo

Laughterhp Do you need us to post the link every month if we are participating? 3mo
aperfectmjk @Laughterhp No, I have yours saved. Just let me know if you plan to participate. 3mo
Laughterhp Okay! I‘m in for August! 3mo
HeathHof Thank you for the reminder! I am still working on mine but will post the link asap 3mo

I'm not always the best at links so please let me know if that one doesn't work 😂 I'm still adding more, but there should be plenty to choose from even if I don't finish adding from my list!!
HeathHof https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/16839577-heather-hofman?ref=nav_mybooks&sh...
I am also terrible at links, so hopefully this works! I will continue to add to it. :)
aperfectmjk @TheAromaofBooks @HeathHof links look great! 👍 2mo
Littlewolf1 Is there still time to join and how many books should we put on the list 2mo
aperfectmjk @Littlewolf1 yes, there's still time. As many books as you want, the more the better though. There needs to be more than 5. 2mo
aperfectmjk @Zuhkeeyah @PuddleJumper glad to have you! Sorry for the delayed response. I'm on vacation. 2mo
Clwojick I‘m just seeing this now, but I want to join in. I blame the lack of sleep, but I‘m slightly confused. Will I eventually be reading from my shelf, or the shelf of whom I‘m paired with? Just want to make sure before I choose my books! 2mo
Clwojick Nevermind, I went through some posts and I understand it better now. Also, is this going to be an ongoing challenge! This would be such a fun add on to other challenges like #Scarathlon and #Wintergames. Easy enough to change up the books, as the months go on. 💚 2mo
aperfectmjk @Clwojick if people enjoy it, we can definitely continue it. I just thought it would be something fun and different because I'm so bad at reading some of the books that have been on my tbr for a while. I seem to always go for the new releases so I figured if I had a challenge that pushes me to read them I would do better 2mo
Clwojick Totally makes sense! I‘m so all over the place with the books that I read, that I find these monthly readathons really help me to focus on specific things I need to get to. I‘m doing ARCs and NetGalleys for August, and Series in September. Then it‘s straight into #Scarathlon, #nonfictionnovember and #WinterGames. I‘m going to try to find one for each month, so it will fun to change out the #TrappedOnAnIsland picks each month. 2mo
aperfectmjk @Clwojick I'm glad it's going to work out for you. I have over 200 books on my list that I'm just going to keep on there in an effort to get through them. We'll see how well this challenge works. 😆 2mo
aperfectmjk @Littlewolf1 are you still thinking of joining? 2mo
Littlewolf1 Yes… working on my list now (edited) 2mo
aperfectmjk @she.hearts.horror got you on the list for September! Thanks for joining. 2mo

One of my favorites of the year! Clint Smith is a poet, and you can see that in his writing in this book, in which he visits historic sites, including a plantation, a notorious prison, and a confederate cemetery, to see how the story of slavery is told. Very well done, with a mix of his own experience with the public history of these sites. Five stars #NonfictionNovember

Crazy Brave | Joy Harjo

This memoir as my introduction to Joy Harjo, the first Native American poet laureate. I really enjoyed how she wove poetry into this story of her early life. She has a second memoir that I‘m definitely reading. #nonfictionnovember

A kissing bug sounds like something that would be cute, but is in fact a bug that can cause serious illness. This book covers the author‘s aunt‘s illness from this bug and the research (and lack of understanding) of this bug. She weaves her personal story with the science. It‘s really good! #NonfictionNovember

Megabooks Agree!! 10mo
monalyisha Omg kissing bugs freak me right the f*ck out! 🙈😱 I can‘t even. 10mo
MallenNC @Megabooks It‘s so hard to describe why this book is so good. 10mo
See All 7 Comments
MallenNC @monalyisha I‘d never heard of them before this book! It‘s possible they‘re called something else here. But they definitely freak me out now. 10mo
monalyisha @MallenNC I once saw a bug on my pillow and couldn‘t identify it. I tried to explain what it looked like to my husband who, unbeknownst to me, had been sleeping before I started talking. I was like, “I don‘t know. It has wobbly looking joints. It looks OLD.” He woke up and, in a fog, responded nonsensically, “He‘s not THAT old.” 😂 Anyway, after googling I was convinced it was a kissing bug & that we were in mortal danger. (edited) 10mo
monalyisha @MallenNC I can‘t remember what it actually was: a pine bug, or a stink bug. Something totally innocuous. But thus began my deep-seated fear (especially after learning that it‘s not unheard of to see them in my state)! 10mo
MallenNC I don‘t blame you! I would be scared of it too. Normally I don‘t worry about bugs in the house bc my cats catch them, but this kind of bug is dangerous to them too. 10mo

Getting in a little nonfiction before the end of #NonfictionNovember. Reading COVID stories from last year & realizing not much has changed. We know so little about this virus & we don't even know if we're using the best methods to track & fight it. Also a NYC ER & how the doctors grapple with life & death decisions. When you can't treat everyone how do you decide who to treat? I don't think they are all COVID stories though, thank goodness! 😊

I had a great #NonfictionNovember with eight books finished, and I‘m in the midst of a reread of The Warmth of Other Suns with a #BuddyRead here on Litsy. I need to do reviews of all of these but they were all worth reading. The tagged book is one of my top books of 2021.

Wake and Seek You are graphic memoirs/nonfiction and I‘m really beginning to enjoy nonfiction in that format.

vivastory Graphic memoirs are one of my favorite genres. I've really discovered some great ones this year. 10mo
MallenNC @vivastory I‘d love some recommendations if any are particular favorites! I‘ve read the ones on my Nonfiction 2021 card and this post. The only other I‘ve read is Good Talk by Mira Jacobs. (edited) 10mo
vivastory For some reason I'm only now receiving a tag notification about your reply. 😬 I have several recommendations for graphic memoirs. These are all graphic memoirs that I haven't been able to stop thinking about since I first read:
*Derf Backderf: Kent State (I also loved Backderf's gm Trashed, & although it is darker I also enjoyed his gm Dahmer- about him going to school with Jeffrey Dahmer).
*Thi Bui: The best We Could Do (cont)
vivastory *Radtke's: Imagine Wanting Only This
*March trilogy
*Nicole Georges“ Calling Dr. Laura (out of all of the books I've mentioned so far, this was the only 4 star. But it's def worth reading I think)
I have posted full reviews of each of these on Litsy if you're curious to learn more about each title
