pickFour women have landed on a frontier planet. Their mission is to civilize the native people on behalf of the Empire. Meanwhile, the members of a previous mission have mysteriously disappeared. An eerie science fiction tale told with few words and stunning black and white art. Sex, jealousy, hubris and cultural misunderstandings—there‘s a lot going on. I loved this!
The four female missionaries arrive on this planet looking stylized in their black hoods and their clothing that accentuates their four archetypes: maiden, mother, temptress, crone. I was thrilled by this page, which shows Sarai looking like an ordinary woman before she transforms by donning her nun-like outfit.
Colonialism addressed in science fiction. Both Jael, the four-eyed scientist on the left, and Sarai, leader of an Empire missionary team, have come to this planet from elsewhere.
Jael: You‘re doing me a great favour, educating the local ladies.
Sarai: It‘s for their benefit, not yours.
The graphic elements of this graphic novel are stunning. Look at that art nouveau lettering! Look at that creepy plant! 🖤
I thought this looked cool at the library, anyone read it?
so-soAnother interesting premise from Sophie Goldstein, yet something about this story didn't click with me. I feel like I should like this more than I actually did. Great artwork and author bio though.
pickHmm. This is difficult to rate. I'm glad I read it. The drawings are cool. If that says anything. Never try to train aliens 👽 to be like you or they turn into over-sexed killers. Never trust those with four eyes🤓😁.
The orchid/carnivorous plants/vagina like drawings throughout this add to it's sexualized otherworldliness. 🌹

This was just a little weird for me and some things felt underdeveloped. I hated the font type in this and while I found the cover to be striking, the interior illustrations were not as stunning.
