Bali: Heaven and Hell | Phil Jarratt
1 post | 1 to read
Phil Jarrett draws upon first-hand experience and extensive research to provide a lively and entertaining narrative of the social, cultural and political history of an island paradise close to Australians' hearts. Heaven and Hell details the mythology and spirituality of Bali as well as the island's tumultuous and often violent past. Extensive interviews with expats and residents from the 70's in Bali deliver to readers a unique first-hand view of the dramatic changes and effects that modern development and western colonisation have had over the past 50 years, as well as enchanting us with their memories and stories. A popular destination for Australians, in particular, Bali represents many different things - for numerous young people it is their first destination overseas, for some it is a spiritual destination, others visit for a beach holiday, and still more come for profitable business opportunities. Heaven and Hell is a story of survival in the face of genocide, natural disaster, terrorism, cultural imperialism and corruption on a grand scale, and of how Bali has managed to present the same smiling face to generations of tourists, despite the enormous price its people have had to pay for inhabiting the glorious island at the "morning of the world".

Not completely book related, but hoping for some help from all you wonderful and smart Littens still. My bf and I are going to Bali in June, and I need some tips for must see places - bookish or other, authors or books I need to know about. So if you have anything worth knowing about Bali, let me know! 🙏🌞

TheLondonBookworm Avoid Kuta 😂 and that general area it's very touristy and manic! 7y
Simona I don't have any tips ... but I do have envy 😉🤗 7y
julesG Agree to what @TheLondonBookworm wrote. Ubud, Sacred Monkey Forest, all the wonderful temples, the volcano, waterfalls. We hired a driver, wasn't much more expensive than renting a car, he took us on tours all over the island - and told us to steer clear of the tiny taxis with yellow license plates. ;) 7y

Kalalalatja @TheLondonBookworm yeah I had heard that, it sounds a little awful 😂 @julesG good tip with the cabs, thanks! 7y
LeahBergen Everything that @julesG said! We hired a driver, as well. Definitely go for cheap spa treatments - massages with a flower bath 👍🏼 7y
Kalalalatja @LeahBergen sounds amazing! 7y
