Mehso-so

The illustrations are striking, there is some good background info, but overall, this makes the code talkers a generic group and doesn‘t offer the kind of distinction that they deserve. There are better books about the topic out there for kids.

Pickpick

This beautifully illustrated NF is about the Navajo language and it's utilization during WW2 when it served as an unbreakable code for the United States military. While this book contains some illustrations and text that may too mature for some students, I still believe that it would be great as a RA for older students learning about WW2 or the Navajo. #ucflae3414f17

cheyennewilliams https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/17-18/creating-codes-like-navaj... This is link to a lesson plan for kids to create their own code using the Navajo language. While it lists other books for the reading, the lesson plan can be adapted for this particular book. (edited) 7y
cheyennewilliams UDL strategy 3.1: activate or supply background knowledge. Teachers should provide some background knowledge about WW2 and the Navajo before students complete the activity. This book is quite helpful with providing background knowledge about the Navajo before it explains their involvement in the war. This book could serve as the background knowledge for the activity. 7y
cheyennewilliams EL strategy 6: continually monitor students comprehension. Teachers should pause throughout the reading to check that students are following along and understanding what is being read. Teachers should also move around the room and check for comprehension and understanding while the students complete the related activity (edited) 7y
