The Road to Middle-earth
The Road to Middle-earth: Revised and Expanded Edition | Tom Shippey
5 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
Uniquely qualified to explicate Tolkiens worldview, this journey into the roots of Lord of the Rings is a classic in its own right (Salon). The Road to Middle-earth, Tom Shippeys classic work, now revised in paperback, explores J. R. R. Tolkiens creativity and the sources of his inspiration. Shippey shows in detail how Tolkiens professional background led him to write The Hobbit and how he created a timeless charm for millions of readers. Examining the foundation of Tolkiens most popular work, The Lord of the Rings, Shippey also discusses the contribution of The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales to Tolkiens great myth cycle, showing how Tolkiens more difficult books can be fully appreciated. He goes on to examine the remarkable twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, written by Tolkiens son and literary heir Christopher Tolkien, which traces the creative and technical processes by which Middle-earth evolved.

Well, I couldn't content myself with just the one door, so, in order of preference*, I'd go:
1: Middle-earth
2: Camelot
3: 221b Baker Street
4: Narnia
5: Wonderland

* I reserve the right to change my mind depending on which book I might be reading. 😁

SailorMoon I can't stop laughing at DumbleDOOR 🤣 6y
Slajaunie 1. Tardis. 2. Hogwarts 6y
GingerAntics Most of them, actually. DumbleDOOR threw me off that‘s funny. 🤣😂🤣 6y

Bookwomble @SailorMoon @GingerAntics Dumble"door" made me groan ? @Slajaunie The Tardis nearly made my top five - if the Fourth Doctor was the pilot, then it'd be a shoe-in ? 6y
GingerAntics @Bookwomble I thought it was just a goofy thing it added in. There are some of these doors I wouldn‘t go in because I don‘t know them, others I wouldn‘t go in because of modern connotations that have kind of ruined the concept. I‘d want to go with several doctors, but I don‘t think the 4th would be one of them. I‘d be game for 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 13. It might be fun to do 1 and 2 as well...maybe even 3. 6y
Bookwomble @GingerAntics Goodness! What could the Fourth Doctor have done for you to turn them down? 🤔😉 6y
GingerAntics @Bookwomble it‘s the hair. I feel as the doctor‘s companion, only one of us should have crazy curly hair...although that does remove 6, too, doesn‘t it? Anyway, I also heard Tom Baker has been kind of mean to fans at times. I dunno. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Bookwomble @GingerAntics I'm sure he has been rude to fans, given that he's an eccentric, grumpy old bastard! On the other hand, some fans probably deserve it 😁 6y
GingerAntics @Bookwomble I‘ll give you that. Some people don‘t get the idea that just because someone is on a tv show doesn‘t mean you should interrupt every meal they ever eat outside of their own homes or run up to them every time they leave their house. 6y
merelybookish Who would willingly enter Westeros? Just look at the door! 6y
Bookwomble @merelybookish It does look rather uninviting! 😮 6y

If you love Tolkien you will love this special look at his wonderful world. Tolkien‘s love of fable was one of his inspirations for writing but I believe his love of language also was a driving force in his books. I believe he is the greatest fantasy writer ever.

Definitely not an easy read and a little long winded at times, but worthwhile for any Tolkien fan interested in what influenced him to write the Middle-earth legendarium. Also, the more of Tolkien's works you've read the better. There was a lot of discussion about Tolkien's poetry that was lost on me. I would suggest reading at least The Hobbit, LOTR, and The Silmarillion before reading this.
