Tim Winton's first Miles Franklin Award-winner 'This is dazzling, dazzling. It makes the heart pound.' Los Angeles Times Whales have always been the life-force of Angelus, a small town on the south coast of Western Australia. Their annual passing defines the rhythms of a life where little changes, and the town depends on their carcasses. So when the battle begins on the beaches outside their town, and when Queenie Cookson, a local girl, joins the Greenies to make amends for the crimes of her whaling ancestors, it can only throw everything into chaos. 'Shallows is that rare thing, not historical fiction, but fiction which brings the history of a place to life . . . a major work of Australia literature.' Washington Post 'A profound and inspiring work of fiction.' The Age 'Shallows is more than a passionate meditation on the tragedy of whaling; it is in some ways a minimalist Moby Dick, a questioning of the ways of God to man and of man to God.' Mehso-so

After dedicating over 7 hours to this audiobook I've listened & listened again & it's not grabbing me.
Living a bit of a slumpish existence atm I don't have the drive to continue with this story & deciphering the characters.
It might be better to read than to listen so I may still tackle it another time as I'm quite enjoying Tim Winton's work right now.
I think I'll begin Cloudstreet tonight as I have the paperback as well as the audiobook

After reading about whaling on the Aust. coast in Rush Oh!, I saw this book by Winton, who already intrigues me, so I thought I'd sample this story

It begins with a whaler in 1831 & moves beyond to 1978 in the year of his granddaughter who joins the Greenies in attempts to make up for her family's whaling history

I'm a 1/4 in & there are a few characters & times settings so I think I'm going to begin again, take notes & pay attention this time!

HannaPolkadots Oooh, this sounds interesting! I really like his Cloudstreet, so might give this one a go 😊 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @HannaPolkadots Cool! I've got Cloud Street sitting on my nightstand waiting for it's turn. I've heard a few recommendations for it already. Looking forward to it, thank you! 4y
