The Sun and the Moon
The Sun and the Moon: The Remarkable True Account of Hoaxers, Showmen, Dueling Journalists, and Lunar Man-Bats in Nineteenth-Century New York | Matthew Goodman
2 posts | 3 read | 11 to read
On August 26, 1835, a fledgling newspaper called the Sun brought to New York the first accounts of remarkable lunar discoveries. A series of six articles reported the existence of life on the moon--including unicorns, beavers that walked on their hind legs, and four-foot-tall flying man-bats. In a matter of weeks it was the most broadly circulated newspaper story of the era, and the Sun, a working-class upstart, became the most widely read paper in the world. An exhilarating narrative history of a divided city on the cusp of greatness, and tale of a crew of writers, editors, and charlatans who stumbled on a new kind of journalism, The Sun and the Moon tells the surprisingly true story of the penny papers that made America a nation of newspaper readers.

Fascinating historical account of what is arguably the first media hoax! A brief history of the newspaper industry in NYC as it related to the players involved, then all the amazing details of the hoax, complete with "cameos" by Edgar Allan Poe & PT Barnum! Awesome read for any history geek!

SharonGoforth Sounds like a fun read! 8y
DiruVamp This is on my TBR but I'm just not sure. I trust you - would I like it? 😉😂 8y
callunakeep @DiruVamp To be honest I think you personally would ultimately be happy if you read it but you would probably be better to read this slowly, on and off while you read other things. Or just start reading it at Part Two 😝 8y
DiruVamp @callunakeep ok cool I'll take that into consideration! Thanks 😊👍🏻 8y

Just got this one. The bat-men before The Batman, I think. Looks to be very cool, essential-type reading.
