The Beach House
The Beach House: A Novel | Jane Green
15 posts | 43 read | 22 to read
The New York Times bestseller and ultimate beach read from the author of Promises to Keep and Another Piece of My Heart Nan Powell is a free-spirited, sixty-five-year-old widow who's not above skinny-dipping in her neighbors' pools when they're away and who dearly loves her Nantucket home. But when she discovers that the money she thought would last forever is dwindling, she realizes she must make drastic changes to save her beloved house. So Nan takes out an ad: Rooms to rent for the summer in a beautiful old Nantucket home with water views and direct access to the beach. Slowly people start moving in to the house, filling it with noise, laughter, and with tears. As the house comes alive again, Nan finds her family and friends expanding. Her son comes home for the summer, and then an unexpected visitor turns all their lives upside down. As she did so masterfully in her numerous New York Times bestselling novels, including Second Chance, Jane Green once again proves herself one of the preeminent writers of contemporary women's fiction.

@BarbaraBB thank you for the #titlesandtunes background! I got the tagged book on the cheap for the #May #IslandVibe read and this song is absolutely summer for me, my kids watched Aquamarine over and over, and my youngest and I are going to Weezer next month!

BarbaraBB I love it when a song represents memories! 2y
Cinfhen Fun 🤩 I missed live music 🎶 and I‘m so happy to see a beach read on this list too🏝️📖 2y

Everyone else: how wonderful would it be to live right on the beach
Me: I wonder if you can get insurance for them. I bet it would cost a bomb.
Lo I am truly my father's (risk averse surveyor) daughter - I messaged him about this, his response was: "you can't insure against certainties".

AlaMich ? such a dad thing to say...right up there with "have you changed the oil in your car recently?" (edited) 7y

Can't do it. Going to bail. Did this book have an editor?

Ugh. If this wasn't for book club I would bail (still might). Three chapters in - each chapter about a different set of characters and it's all infodumps about their back stories. Basically nothing has actually happened yet. Books that start like this are usually automatic bails for me. Is this one worth sticking with?

MamaGina DNF it!!! Life's too short to read crappy book club picks!!!!!!!🤓 8y

Perfect summer read. Exactly what you'd expect from Jane Green. Let's all move to Nantucket and have lovely, uncomplicated lives.

It's a little distracting that this book set in Nantuckett has very English dialogue. American couples don't typically "row" and I've never referred to myself as "quite pleased" about anything. Pretty sure "fairy lights" are strictly English. It's not important, but I can't help noticing.

Can we all agree that leaving food debris in library books is DISGUSTING and if you can't keep you Cheeto dust off the pages, maybe hold off on snacking?

NatalieR Ugh, I hate that! Where's the respect? 9y
CleverGirl About every third page has crumbs or orange fingerprints. Who thinks that's ok? I'm finding it hard to read this book without actually touching it and getting someone else's snack cooties. 9y
LauraBrook So gross! We used to get some of the grossest books returned at my library. Not even kidding, there were a whole pile of paperback kids early reader books drenched in urine, like they thought we wouldn't figure out it was them and not some rando returning the books. 😷 People are gross. 9y

CleverGirl I guess I shouldn't complain about the Cheetos 😳 9y
JacqMac I was so happy when library ebooks became a thing. Some people are so rude. 8y
CleverGirl @JacqMac the waiting lists for ebooks tend to be longer in our system. I think I'm going to have to learn to enjoy the anticipation for a crumb-free reading experience. 8y

Finally! Some legit SUMMER BEACH reading. If only I were on a beach instead of stuck in this parking lot.
