Robicheaux: A Novel | James Lee Burke
12 posts | 12 read | 2 reading | 4 to read
James Lee Burkes most beloved character, Dave Robicheaux, returns in this gritty, atmospheric mystery set in the towns and backwoods of Louisiana. DAVE ROBICHEAUX IS A HAUNTED MAN. Between his recurrent nightmares about Vietnam, his battle with alcoholism, and the sudden loss of his beloved wife, Molly, his thoughts drift from one irreconcilable memory to the next. Images of ghosts at Spanish Lake live on the edge of his vision. During a murder investigation, Dave Robicheaux discovers he may have committed the homicide hes investigating, one which involved the death of the man who took the life of Daves beloved wife. As he works to clear his name and make sense of the murder, Robicheaux encounters a cast of characters and a resurgence of dark social forces that threaten to destroy all of those whom he loves. What emerges is not only a propulsive and thrilling novel, but a harrowing study of America: this nations abiding conflict between a sense of past grandeur and a legacy of shame, its easy seduction by demagogues and wealth, and its predilection for violence and revenge. James Lee Burke has returned with one of Americas favorite characters, in his most searing, most prescient novel to date.

Southern Louisiana detective with a drinking problem struggles to determine what‘s right while facing down local mobsters, corrupt police, and international crime. Backdrop of civil war history and Hollywood interpretations. I read this as a stand-alone, but I imagine it would be a richer experience to have read others in the series.

My Dad loved Dave Robicheaux. I felt he was reading over my shoulder:the lush descriptions of the Louisiana weather and landscape, how Dave‘s getting older, and mortality is on his mind as he deals with murder and madness. Ghosts haunt his partner Clete. Spot-on focus on how Trumpian politician swamp rise.Sometimes you get the bad guys, sometimes you don‘t. Dave and Clete are tarnished knights who find reasons to go on in little scraps of goodness.

LMAO! Best line so far "I hope both of you get rich twice and go broke three times" LMAO. That is some spiteful shit.

If anyone tells you he‘s from New Orleans and doesn‘t drink, he‘s probably not from New Orleans. Louisiana is not a state; it‘s an outdoor mental asylum in which millions of people stay bombed most of their lives. That‘s not an exaggeration. Cirrhosis is a family heirloom.

Kept my attention. Well written as usual. Burke brings characters and locations to life. I can smell the rain and the bayou. He left some mysteries unsolved. I always look forward to his next book.

Can‘t go wrong with Robicheaux-Patton combo. Sometimes listening to Patton I just zone out, his voice and cadence are sweet and lyrical and kinda mesmerizing. Then I have to backtrack. But it‘s all good.

The latest by James Lee Burke always gets priority. The moodiness, the descriptions of Louisiana, and the overall “noir-ness” appeal.
