Ugh. Self-centered. Womanizer. Ugh. Ugh. I feel even more disgusted with the "cool" father who was OK with his teenage son doing drugs in front of him and encouraging a woman friend to have sex with his son. Ugh-o all around.

I really really wanted to love it but I didn't. Her first trilogy was on sale but I just did not think it was a wise purchase for me since I found this one to be, well . . . mediocre. Ended with a cliffhanger and I don't care enough to read the next one. Bummed. On the lower end of so-so.

First half was quick moving and exciting, giving historical background and first hand accounts of finding and working a major archeology site. Second half mainly concentrated on leish and other diseases, and their effects on people and culture. A lot of info on how diseases decimated indigenous peoples. Not as exciting and much more sobering than the first half. Overall I'm glad I read it and would recommend it.

Over fifty percent read in one setting! So far loving it! Not loving my new Nook 7. I can easily see myself bouncing it off a wall shortly. I'd rather read on my phone for cripe's sake.

The cat appears to want attention. This was my view as I tried to read.
I very much liked the novel. A woman disappears on a business wilderness hiking retreat. Is she dead? Alive? Are her co-workers involved? Some readers felt that this novel is too similar the author's The Dry, but I like the protagonist and the Australian setting. I'm hoping the author continues writing this series.

An interesting mystery based in Florida. Lane returns home with her two daughters after her marriage breaks up, but finds not much has changed. People still hold onto assumptions made decades ago but the disappearance of a young girl brings things to a head and the truth can't be hidden forever.

I'm finding it really hard to write a spoiler-free review for this one. I picked it up because I had been hearing wonderful things about the writer. It was also heavily discounted. The book is divided in half, with the first part concentrating on Lotto, the husband. We see the world from his point of view. The second half is dedicated to Mathilde, his wife. It is here that we see events as they truly happened. It was totally unexpected for me.

9999 I just asked my husband to read it so we can talk about it. There are so many layers to this book. I loved how the plays were written into it. There was a part in which someone told Mathilde they wanted to meet HER because she was the interesting one, that truly foretold a lot. 6y
lute @sskk Is your husband interested in reading it? It would be interesting to hear how a man views it. I so want a man who reads. 6y
9999 @lute He said he would read it. He likes to read, but we usually read different books. I don't know anything about you, but I waited a long time to settle down with someone. He was worth the wait. Be picky about the things that matter. 6y

My first Setterfield book! Finished this over 400 pager in 2 sittings and I have every intention in seeking out the rest of her novels. At first I was concerned with the large number of characters introduced at the beginning, but there was further character development in the book, and the characters were all needed for the story. I hate to use the cliche term "magical", but it fits this novel!

I have been slogging my way through this book for over two months now. I finally found it what happened at the barbeque but I still have over 100 pages to read. Ugh. I don't like any of the characters and I just want it to end. The only reason I have continued is because I've invested so much time and I want to use it toward the GoodReads Reading Challenge. I've finished eleven other books since I started this.

Notafraidofwords Wow. I think I would have given up. Lol 7y

Simonetta, the main character, is thought to be Botticelli's muse for The Birth of Venus. A little too much romance for me which I knew going into it, but Botticelli's Birth of Venus is one of my favorite pieces of art. Lots of similarities between this and The Girl with the Pearl Earring. Don't forget the author's notes if you pick this up. Very interesting stuff on the Medicis and Italian history. Three stars out of five.

While I found some of the book interesting, it most certainly did not need to be over 600 pages. Sheesh. Get a real editor next time. Badly written romance portions. Wow. I think it is my favorite Charlie Parker book yet. I find it so hard to believe that they have not sold the movie options yet for any of these books. Unless they have and I just don't know. Strong, yet flawed characters. Violent but good usually comes out on top of evil. A little bit of the supernatural thrown in for good measure. This is the 14th book of the series with a new one coming out in July. Already pre-ordered!

I'm bummed. I didn't really like it. In order for me to truly enjoy a YA book, I need to forget it is a YA book while I'm reading it. That was not the case. The characters felt superficial and stock. The parents in it were either just swell or horrifying - no nuance. No layers. It felt like it had potential, but it never reached it. Sigh. I need to be wowed.

Just started this one. Saw all the great reviews on here but so far, I feel his portrayal of the the main characters is somehow off. He's an adult writing from a teenager's perspective and I'm not feeling it. Only about 50 pages in so hopefully that will change.

Ginny is a fourteen year old autistic girl torn between her Forever parents and her unreliable, abusive, addicted birth mom. The biggest problem is that no one is really listening to Ginny.
