Another qualified pick. This 30-year career retrospective contains lots of good stories, most being real-world horror and crime fiction. I enjoyed it overall.

Put the stories all together, though, and patterns jump out. Chizmar uses the “someone learns something awful about a loved one” plot over & over, and his characters‘ relationships often feel like performative normality—without the ironic awareness that might amplify the horrific elements.

Okay obviously this isn‘t ‘a Long December‘, but for some reason Litsy doesn‘t have Richard Chizmar‘s latest novella. I loved this story, a new update on a classic horror tale. It was fun, it was an easy read, not really much else to say. Not a challenging read, but just a hell of a lot of fun.
