When Micajah Fenton discovers a crater in his front yard with a broken time glider in the bottom and a naked, virtual woman on his lawn, he delays his plans to kill himself. While helping repair the marooned time traveler's glider, Cager realizes it can return him to his past to correct a mistake that had haunted him his whole life. In gratitude for his help, the virtual creature living in the circuitry of the marooned glider, sends Cager back in time as his ten-year-old self, knowing everything he'd known at eighty. As a bonus, it also gives him access to advanced equations of space and time. But living life over knowing the future isn't as easy as Cager anticipated, and he bungles his chance at correcting the most serious mistake of his life. Now he must use his new knowledge of advanced math to build his own time machine to go back and try again. Meanwhile Cager's repairs to the creature's glider fail, keeping it stranded near earth. In desperation, the whale-like creature sends, Ell, a near-human, female copy containing it's consciousness to help Cager. While perfecting time travel, Cager and Ell overcome enormous problems, even being hunted by dinosaurs in the Cretaceous, and Cager falls in love with this indomitable anthropomorphic copy of a creature from across the galaxy.

This was a really interesting tale on time travel.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started it... it was going to go one of two ways; badly wrong or very right. The eventual answer was very right and I am glad I took the time to read it.

I struggled to grow attached to the characters in the first half, but they grew on me in the latter half as the story picked up the pace making it a lot more enjoyable and pushed it to 3.5/4.

🎧 An 80-yr old man travels back in time 70 yrs to correct a mistake. The part of the book set in the Eastern panhandle of FL where the protag is a 10-yo are poignant, tension-filled & well-articulated in setting & atmosphere; But the framing story about time travel technology is the bigger portion of the story & just not as rich. The whole of the book is an oddly weighted, linear plot (sorta like seeing an egg having been swallowed by a snake)👇

Dogearedcopy I‘m somewhat on the fence about the audio narration too: Christopher Lane chose to perform the character as a Florida “cracker” throughout which intuitively doesn‘t square though I can see the justification. There were a couple places too (very beginning and end) where it sounds like CL‘s voice has been inexplicably treated which is a little jarring. 👇 (edited) 4y
Dogearedcopy Ultimately, as much as I loved the “egg” of the plot, the issues outweighed the positive points. Mine seems to be an outlier opinion however: I see consistently high ratings and reviews from others on Audible (edited) 4y

🎧 Starting this one tonight: On his way to committing suicide, an old man meets a space/time traveler near his house...

Chris Lane narrates but his voice sounds “off”. Maybe the publishers altered his voice for an artificial or aged effect?

SaraFair I just signed up for Audible plus. Is it available on there? Curious to see how you like this one- 4y
Dogearedcopy @SaraFair I know it‘s only available on Audible, but I don‘t think it‘s a free/extra listen (i.e. You would have to spend a credit or pay the membership-discounted price). 4y
SaraFair @Dogearedcopy - ok gotcha! 4y

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed going back through the years with the main character and watch him try and succeed in making him own time machine. The characters and setting were like old friends since I live in Louisiana and we have similar landscapes and people. Cager, an 80 year old man gets to go back in time to his 10 year old self to set a past mistake right but does not succeed the first time around.

Audiobook #4 of 2018. Enjoying it enough to keep going. Kinda light fun time travel with a touch of coming of age tale. Don‘t love the narration but it‘s bearable.
