The Penguin Book of Norse Myths
The Penguin Book of Norse Myths: Gods of the Vikings | Kevin Crossley-Holland
8 posts | 12 read | 18 to read
'Burning ice, biting flame; that is how life began' The extraordinary Scandinavian myth cycle is one of the most enduring, exciting, dramatic and compelling of the world's great stories. The Penguin Book of the Norse Myths compellingly retells these stories for the modern reader, taking us from the creation of the world through the building of Asgard's Wall to the final end in Ragnarok. You'll discover how Thor got his hammer and how Odin lost his eye, the terrible price of binding the wolf Fenrir and why Loki the trickster can never be trusted. The Norse myths are as thrilling to read as they are of vast cultural and historical importance. In this gripping book Kevin Crossley-Holland brings alive the passion, cruelty and heroism of these unforgettable stories.

These myths have a lot of killing giants, throwing random body parts into the sky to make stars, and outsmarting various beings. Also, Loki is a dick and Thor is a bit of a blundering brute.

#QuotsyMar19 Day 29: One of the most famous #giant(s) of all time. While I have read the D‘Aulaires‘ version of the Norse myths, I have yet to read this one.

We had an awesome time in Norway - and obviously I had to pick up a couple of books while I was there.

Great introduction to my favourite mythology! Crossley-Holland includes notes explaining his translation and how he chose sources and compiled the collection. Great for newcomers to the Norse Myths and religious studies/classics geeks alike!

Ymir was a frost giant; he was evil from the first. While he slept, he began to sweat. A man and woman grew out of the ooze under his left armpit, and one of his legs fathered a son on the other leg.
