Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn't Count
Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn't Count | David Daley
David Daley’s “extraordinarily timely” (New York Times Book Review) account uncovers the fundamental rigging of our House of Representatives and state legislatures nationwide. Lauded as a “compelling” (The New Yorker) and “eye-opening tour of a process that many Americans never see” (Washington Post), David Daley’s Ratf**ked documents the effort of Republican legislators and political operatives to hack American democracy through an audacious redistricting plan called REDMAP. Since the revolutionary election of Barack Obama, a group of GOP strategists has devised a way to flood state races with a gold rush of dark money, made possible by Citizens United, in order to completely reshape Congress—and our democracy itself. “Sobering and convincing” (New York Review of Books), Ratf**ked shows how this program has radically altered America’s electoral map and created a firewall in the House, insulating the Republican party and its wealthy donors from popular democracy. While exhausted voters recover from a grueling presidential election, a new Afterword from the author explores the latest intense efforts by both parties, who are already preparing for the next redistricting cycle in 2020.

Pennsylvania

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m in PA, they‘ve recently redrawn some of the maps after a long LONG (and often ugly legal) battle. It should be an interesting election...hopefully 6y

This book can be repetitive, but I'm recommending it anyway because this is the most important issue out there that hardly anyone seems to be talking about. Yes, Trump is insane. But that does NOT mean that Democrats will win in the midterms.

It took me 6 weeks to finish this cuz I could only listen to 15 minutes at a time without getting so angry and full of despair. I'm so glad I kept at it. I have such a better understanding now of why American politics seems so out of touch with the people, why we have such polarization, etc. weirdly enough, all experts in the book believe that the only way we can turn this around would be if a republican won in 2016. Seriously, read it.

tpixie Interesting! We will see if they were right! ( although I believe Trump is really an Independent who snuck onto the Republican ticket) 8y
Claireluana @tpixie yes, we will see! It's up to the people to make the changes happen! And good point on DT, he definitely is not a typical republican. 8y

Stop Trump! I just donated to Cheryl Turpin's campaign for Virginia state house. She's a Democrat in a state Republicans have been gerrymandering like crazy. This is a special election happening a week from tomorrow. ✊

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This book was recently recommended to me somewhere else...I need to pick it up soon. 8y
SuperPunkNinja @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven't read it yet but I heard him on NPR. I've been avoiding reading it because the subject infuriates me so much. I think it's time to read it though. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @McShelfington I think I saw it on a list recommended somewhere on the web. Hopefully I'll get to it this year. 8y

Every time I pick up this book, I get angry all over again. The way our country has been manhandled and manipulated by politicians is disgusting. Read this book and gain some knowledge.

Taking a break from my normal diet of YA fantasy to educate myself about the GOP's (successful) efforts to redraw the congressional map in their favor. Know thy enemy...

SiriGuruDevSingh It's reality like this that makes me turn back to bury myself in YA Fantasy!😥 8y
