Reading these diaries has been one of the greatest reading experiences of my life. Really, there‘s too many great aspects for me to list briefly. There‘s all about Virginia who was such an extremely interesting person: troubled, conflicted, witty. Her diary writing is superb, a special genre in itself. Historically, one can learn about the society in which she lived...and on and on...I‘m onward to Diary 3. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LauraBrook Wonderful review. This series of her diaries has been on my shelves for years, and they‘re starting to talk to me. “Read me, read me now!” 5y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Yes! @LauraBrook She gets better and better at it so don‘t be put off by the start of the first diary 😉 5y

To me, this is more exciting than any reality show. I am at the place where Virginia Woolf got up with Vita Sackville-West with whom she had a longterm affair. Ummm...why did she take so long to write in her daily diary again after their dinner on December 19th? Wonder what this first entry of January 1923 says?

I ransack public libraries and find them full of sunk treasure

Depression is real, found even among the most talented. Her low self-esteem made sharing her passion so difficult for her. Writing relieved her sadness but she found it difficult to withstand criticism.

Virginia was still calling me so I am back into her diary for a few more years. I hope this read is much faster.

19 February 1923. I've reached the point in the diary where Virginia and Vita meet. ?
"She is a pronounced Sapphist, & may, thinks Ethel Sands, have an eye on me, old though I am."
(Woolf was 41)

LeahBergen Oh, she certainly DID have her eye on her. 😄 5y
batsy Love it! 5y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads They meet in this Volume? Oh Wow! I can‘t wait! 5y

"A first rate writer . . . respects writing too much to be tricky; startling; doing stunts."
Woolf on Ulysses. (She was not a fan.)

LeahBergen Snort! 😆 6y
Lcsmcat Have to agree with her there! 6y
jewright I always wonder if there is something wrong with me that I hated Ulysses. I do like James‘s short story collection The Dubliners though. I powered through Ulysses, but I thought it was terrible. 6y

I liked this little discourse on her diary and how it's where Woolf "writes out her fidgets." ✍️

I had my interview with K.M[ansfield] on Friday. A steady discomposing formality and coldness at first. No pleasure or excitement of seeing me. It struck me that she is of the cat kind: alien, composed, always solitary & observant. And then we talked about solitude, & I found her expressing my feelings, as I never heard them expressed.
Virginia Woolf's diary, 31 May 1920.

Theaelizabet Fascinating. 6y
merelybookish @sarahbarnes @kspenmoll @LeahBergen @kathedron @Theaelizabet They had an interesting friendship! Awkward and some envy (or Woolf had some) but they also understood each other as artists. 6y
readordierachel Wow 💕 6y
Liz_M I love the description of "the cat kind". I resemble that remark. ? 6y
merelybookish @Liz_M I liked it too, and could also identify. 🐱 6y

#TBT to when my entire life revolved around my grad paper on Virginia Woolf. Sometimes, I miss this. Then I remember the deadline panic... 😅

Angelala007 I love the idea of immersing yourself in the life and work of a brilliant writer like Woolf. 8y
FernsAndFairyTales Oh my gosh I identify so much with this. Except my thesis was on modern fairy tales so my stack was full of fairy tale collections and critical theory on them. 8y
kdwinchester @Angelala007 Pretty sure you go crazy or you fall in love. But I wonder, aren't they practically the same thing? 🤔 8y

kdwinchester @fernsandfairytales Your topic sounds AMAZING. 8y
FernsAndFairyTales @kdwinchester It was! So does yours though! And like yours, the deadlines were a real buzzkill. 8y
Joanne1 Argh, I've got a big deadline looming. I keep thinking when it's done I'll be able to read so much more. 8y
