Our Lady of Alice Bhatti
Our Lady of Alice Bhatti | Mohammed Hanif

From the author of the acclaimed A Case of Exploding Mangoes (An insanely brilliant, satirical first novel . . . Belongs in a tradition that includes Catch-22The Washington Post), a subversively, often shockingly funny new novel set in steaming Karachi, about second chances, thwarted ambitions and love in the most unlikely places. The patients of the Sacred Heart Hospital for All Ailments need a miracle. Alice Bhatti may be just what theyre looking for. Shes the new junior nurse, but thats the only ordinary thing about her. Shes just been released from the Borstal Jail for Women and Children. But more to the point, shes the daughter of a part-time healer in the French Colony, Karachis infamous Christian slum, and it seems she has, unhappily, inherited his part-time gift. With a bit of begrudging but inspired improvisation, Alice begins to bring succor to the patients lining the hospitals corridors and camped outside its gates. But all is not miraculous. Alice is a Christian in an Islamic world, ensnared in the red tape of hospital bureaucracy, trapped by the caste system, torn between her duty to her patients, her father and her husbandwho is a former bodybuilding champion, now an apprentice to the nefarious Gentlemans Squad of the Karachi police, and about to drag Alice into a situation so dangerous that perhaps not even a miracle will be able to save them. But, of course, Alice Bhatti is no ordinary young woman . . . At once a high comedy of errors and a searing illumination of the seemingly unchangeable role of women in Pakistans lower-caste society, Our Lady of Alice Bhatti is a resounding confirmation of Mohammed Hanifs gifts of storytelling and of razor-sharp social satire.

“Teddy has been writing her lovesick notes that she suspects are copied from 100 Best Love Songs of the Past Twenty Years but she thinks that he should get credit for trying. Any man who reaches for a book when he thinks about you is a man you should think about.”

In Karachi, Alice Bhatti works as a nurse in Sacred Heart Hospital. She has a past, cares for patients, marries Teddy Butt, is misunderstood — I kind of wondered where the story was headed, but the Epilogue ties the storylines and themes of love, religion, social status, and gender together well. #Pakistan #ReadingAsia2021

Pickpick

It was hilarious and at the same time so much sad. I like this quality of Muhammad Hanif. Pretty much same humour as in “ A Case of Exploding Mangoes”

The 3+ hours I listened to were full of casual sexual assault, culminating in the title character's sorta-coerced marriage to a dude who was totally creepy to her but who I guess we're supposed to be okay with because he could've raped a prisoner once but he didn't?

Yeah. I'm gonna switch to something else this afternoon.

dastevensish Ugh...I'm sorry three hours of your life were wasted on that. 😞 7y
xicanti @dastevensish I listen at 1.5x in Hoopla, so it was a BIT less than that. I kept hoping I'd connect with it, but nope. :( 7y

Day8 of #augustofpages Alice Bhatti really makes me smile! Recently released from borstal, Alice applies for the position of Junior Nurse, Grade 4. And becomes a miracle for the patients littering the hospital's corridors. With a few prison tricks, a sprinkling of her father's powers as a healer and her colourful personality she's a welcome addition to the Pakastani hospital. And then she falls in crazy, dangerous love... #bookphotochallenge
