The Drama Teacher: A Novel | Koren Zailckas
7 posts | 7 read | 17 to read
By the New York Times bestselling author of Mother, Mother and Smashed, a propulsive new thriller featuring a devious and unreliable narrator who will do anything to give her family a better life Gracie Mueller is a proud mother of two and devoted wife, living with her husband Randy in upstate New York, her life complicated by the usual stressors and tediumyoung children, marriage, moneyand shes settled down comfortably enough. But Gracie, underneath all thats marked her life as average, has a lot to hide about where shes from, who she is, and who shes been. And when Randys failing career as a real estate agent makes finances tight, their home goes into foreclosure, and Gracie feels she has no choice but to return to the creatively illegal and high-stakes lifestyle of her past in order to keep all that shes worked so hard to have. Gracie learned from her manipulatively charming father how to steal identities in order to survive, and she eases back into her routine of lying and cheating with a wicked skillset and gritty resolve. Things begin to slip out of her control, though, when her web of deceit lands her a job as a private school drama teacher--a role that demands emotional honesty--and soon more questions about the truth of her past are raised, including all the ones she never meant to, or even knew to, ask. Written with the style, energy, and penetrating insight that made her memoir Smashed a bestselling phenomenon, Koren Zailckas's next novel confirms her growing reputation as a psychological novelist that can stand up to the best of them.

This was definitely an enjoyable rollercoaster ride about a woman who lives her life to con people. She is a master of theft and deception and the book was really believable. I felt like it could have been shorter and still been good or even better because the story seemed to get over complicated in parts. But, it‘s definitely suspenseful and entertaining.

Meh, I ran out of cares to give for the characters and didn‘t feel the need to finish. Maybe I‘ll go back later and see how it ends but I have a bunch of stuff in my tbr pile that seem more exciting

Super solid pick! This is a creative page-turner that will not blur into all the other thrillers. A sympathetic grifter realizes that the web she‘s woven is a trap. As she unravels her past, she works to build a different kind of future - but first she‘s got to out-con dangerous associates and wriggle out of traps she‘s set. The ‘drama teaching‘ moments can seem a bit apart, and the epilogue needed work, but neither detract from this great read!

A psychological thriller that breaks out of the trope!!! The reader knows early on that the protagonist is a liar and a con artist, but, Zalickas ably creates a character that you are, at least sort of, rooting for anyway (if you watch The Americans, you will get what I mean). The story reveals itself with jigsaw puzzle precision. #netgalley #netgalleyTBRattack

LauraJ Oh, I watch the Americans! I just didn‘t know anyone else did ❤️ 6y
