The character that makes it worth reading this novel is New York. New York City at the turn of the 19th century and New York after the great depression. Following Telsa, Louisa and Walter in New York is fun and interesting. Bryant Park, the New Yorker, the sounds of the streets, the smells make for a compelling portrait. Also Telsa. Parts are really not my cup of tea hence the so-so. #NYCfiction

I wasn't sure about this one to start with (didn't like the cover!) but I was thoroughly absorbed. We're discussing this at book group next week and I know how the conversation will go: it jumps about and has different voices so some of my group will have been frustrated by that. I know what they mean but I found it fine, it hung together coherently enough that even my goldfish brain could keep up. #bookgroup
