The Rapture | Claire McGlasson

This book was amazingly moving, and to think it is based on an actual group of people.... the ending had me moved beyond words.

Scary, the effect of lack of sleep on our bodies. The post-industrial world is not good for sleep!

Not really the point, but I've read a bit of Greek mythology and never come across Procrustes before. He sounds like a....character. #mythology

This was quite a different approach to meditation than i have read before. I wished he would have defined meditation because sometimes it sounded like sitting daydreaming. But it gave me some new ways of thinking about my practice

I'm going with a short story double bill this morning. Greek myths are great for occasional dipping into, and are often bonkers!

The first story, Dead centre by Jean Merrill, is pretty startling. Its about an early moon rocket designer, her husband (an astronaut) and their son. Feel a bit stunned. Don't want to spoil it.

Not in Greece but still enjoying the myths...

Varske I read that when I was a teenager, I guess I would get more out of it now. Do you recommend to reread? (edited) 6y
CJEskriett I've been slowly dipping into it and haven't read it before but speaking as a 45 year old, I think I am getting more from it now than I would have done as a teenager. Enjoying the craziness of some parts, annoyed by the misogyny of others. 6y

Sara Maitland's modernised version of the end of Wordsworth's daffodils poem! 🤣

Really enjoying this, I think of it as a companion piece to A book of silence as she addresses some of the criticism of that book (why she didn't distinguish between silence and solitude)

Full of wisdom, that Marcus Aurelius

Varske Thanks for that quote. It hit the spot today. I‘m busy pondering the difference between job redundancy and retirement. Busy wanting to be busy, but why? 6y
CJEskriett Sounds like a tough choice, and a difficult transition from directed busy-ness to self-directed time. I find it hard to relax and always seen to have my time structured in some way, even though I say I don't want that. Hard habit to break 6y

The Word Is Murder | Anthony Horowitz

Loving this so far. The conceit (that it features the author as a sort of crime-solving sidekick) could be gimmicky but I'm listening to it read by Rory Kinnear and it's wonderful. I like the detail of Horowitz's career and the shifty freelance detective he hooks up with. And I would listen to anything read by Kinnear

I've been trying to read this while on holiday in the Lake District, as the place we're staying is so peaceful it seems to fit. But family life is taking priority. Looking forward to finishing it. Makes me tempted to find a reading /meditation retreat!
