Amateur Hour
Amateur Hour: Motherhood in Essays and Swear Words | Kimberly Harrington
3 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
An emotionally honest, arresting, and funny collection of essays about motherhood and adulthood... Being a mother is a gift. Wheres my receipt? Welcome to essayist Kimberly Harringtons poetic and funny world of motherhood, womanhood, and humanhood, not necessarily in that order. Its a place of loud parenting, fierce loving, too much social media, and occasional inner monologues where timeless debates are resolved such as Pro/Con: Caving to PTO Bake Sale Pressure (PRO: Skim the crappiest brownies for myself. CON: Theyre really crappy.) With accessibility and wit, she captures the emotions around parenthood in artful and earnest ways, highlighting this time in the middlemidlife, the middle years of childhood, how women are stuck in the middle of so much. Its a place of elation, exhaustion, and time whipping past at warp speed. Finally, its a quiet space to consider the girl you were, the mother you are, and the woman you are always becoming.

I had another B&N coupon and found a few books on my TBR that were at excellent prices on their website.... receiving #BookMail is like the perfect salve for the start of my short (and yet agonizing) work week!

PS Is King‘s Hodges trilogy worth reading before The Outsider? I‘ve heard there are spoilers for those books in this one... 🤔

vivastory Really?! I might have to stop reading The Outsider. I'm only 200 pages in & loving it, but I have only read book 1 of the Bill Hodges trilot! 6y
vivastory Trilogy* 6y
mrozzz Everything I‘ve read says the spoilers are “major” 😬 @vivastory 6y

vivastory I had my brother Google it (so nothing would be spoiled for me) & he said that there's a definite spoiler. 😬😡😠 Looks like I'll be setting aside the outsider & getting caught up. 6y
RidgewayGirl Whether or not you have to read them, the Bill Hodges trilogy is fantastic. 6y
mrozzz Okay you don‘t have to tell me twice! @RidgewayGirl 6y
mrozzz It was pretty annoying that the simple tagline of “in the same universe as Bill Hodges” or some other such thing wasn‘t included. @vivastory 6y
TheBookgeekFrau I can see why the spoilers can be considered major, but I don‘t think it will ruin the experience of reading the Hodges trilogy after reading The Outsider. The trilogy was so good that it doesn‘t matter if you already know some stuff, there will still be a ton of discoveries 6y
mrozzz Noted! @C.Perone 6y

Being a mother myself I connected with this book. That being said it would be enjoyable if you werent a mother too. Because it touches on so much more than motherhood but family, marriage and really the ups and down of life itself.
It had me hooked from the beginning. Was laugh out loud funny, but almost had me in tears too. Its honest, raw and poetic. It will be released May 1st/18 be sure to check it out!
