Wow:
“How strange that a person can look back on her life & see all the tiny decisions/actions— even moments of inertia in which nothing appeared to be happening— all the trailing comets of them hurtling forward like fireworks, not into nothingness/insignificance, but toward a future moment, a split second in which everything came together in an explosion of certainty & unity so that you could only gasp: Oh! So that‘s where it was all leading to.”

Incredibly relatable, speaking to varying levels of familial bonds & lack thereof by different voices. My writing instructor was included as were several of my favorite authors: Carmen Maria Machado, Melissa Febos, Kiera Laymon... It‘s well-worth a read whether or not you & your mother are close. The stories sparked many emotions, mostly empathy. I so respect writers who chose to share these pieces of their realities. I crave more of this honesty.

Christine I really enjoyed this one, too. ❤️ 4w

BarbaraBB That sounds good, the new job! I can imagine you have less to time read! I am fine, enjoying autumn. Busy at work too but lots of time to read and listen to podcasts (my latest addiction)! 😘 1w
mrozzz @BarbaraBB podcasts are dangerous!! I never got into them so I‘m at least cranking through lots of audiobooks to make up for my slower consumption of print books. I hope autumn for you is as lovely as it is here! 1w
BarbaraBB You are right! I should listen to audiobooks instead. But I can‘t help myself. Those true crime series keep calling out to me! Have you moved yet? Have a lovely time in your new house! 🍂 🍂❤️ 1w
mrozzz I get it!! @BarbaraBB Yes! I‘m all moved in and I donated a bunch of books to my nearby secondhand shop so that I would have a little room to grow into my new shelves (which I‘m quickly filling up!) 1w

In a style that floats between traditional prose & modified verse AND first/second/third person, Yrsa tells a heart-wrenching story of her mother‘s troubles following a young pregnancy with her brother then Yrsa‘s own life as she‘s exiled to her grandparents‘ house because her mother had a boyfriend who couldn‘t be trusted with Yrsa‘s growing body. There she was subjected to following strict religious rules while parsing her burgeoning sexuality.

OH NO I'M DONE 😭And as I finished we got the enormous news that Simon & Baz‘s story IS NOT THAT OVER YET AND oh wow this is definitely the kind of focus on Baz I was hoping for! This was such a fun adventure through the mundane, expansive, ever-changing American landscape. I was on the edge of my seat throughout. There was plenty of danger and magic and laughter and some sorrow. Lovely.

😍 It's 1999 & Lincoln is a mildly unhappy 20-something who just started on the night shift in IT at a local paper. He's living at home with his mother and is often criticized by she & his sister. When he starts reading the flagged emails being exchanged between two employees at the paper, he guiltily chuckles at & falls for one of the writers, a movie reviewer, as she complains about her boyfriend & consoles her friend‘s lack-of-baby woes.

I‘ve been on a roller coaster of emotion these last several weeks. My husband & I got news that a friend passed away unexpectedly at age 29 & though it took a day to hit me, it really packed a wallop. I wasn‘t reading much as we waited for a date for the wake/funeral and then we spent the past weekend crying & remembering him. The shining light through it all, aside from the rest of our dear friends was a job offer (!!!) and, always, new books 💕

The story required much attention as the present changes each time Kate wakes up from one of her dreams in the olde world of Albion & Shakespeare. Her boyfriend & her best friend are the only constants for her in 2000 where her sanity is questioned as she becomes more & more invested in her 16th century life & the actions she could take which, hundreds of years down the line, may prevent the collapse of civilization. I was rapt.

Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane

In the style of Celeste Ng, Lauren Groff or even Hanya Yanagihara (?!!), Keane has also crafted a near-perfect emotional family epic. Spanning the time from patriach Francis Gleeson's & his partner‘s first days on the force in the early 70s, through to present day, she artfully styled meandering sentences that made me sigh/gasp/tear up, & left me desperate for more of her excellence, but really desperate for the rest of the Gleeson/Stanhope story.

Daisy Jones & The Six | Taylor Jenkins Reid

Mehso-so

Though Reid wrote another unputdownable story which I sped through in a few sittings, when I think too hard about the plethora of characters I can't help but poke holes in the weak reasons for the animosity that broiled behind the scenes as the band's music shot up the charts. I was also dubious of the formatting which allowed the characters to confess in interviews, recalling too accurately what happened as they accrued fame/money/drugs.

rachelm The audiobook of this added sooooo much 4mo
mrozzz @rachelm I keep hearing that. I closed the book feeling like it would be a great movie but probably didn‘t have to be, well, a book. I missed a lot of the parts we couldn‘t focus on because characters talking wouldn‘t talk like the typical scene-building tone and observations would require 😕 4mo
Megabooks I thought the characters other than the two main ones (the rest of the band) were pretty one-dimensional. I found it pretty forgettable. 4mo

KatieDid927 Agreed 4mo
BarbaraBB Good points. I agree with you as well as with @Megabooks , forgettable indeed. I just read her other book and had the same thoughts again. 4mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I liked Seven Husbands more, but I read it two years ago, and sometimes my opinions change on subsequent readings. That said, I‘m not particularly inclined to pick it up again. I did enjoy an epistolary novella of hers I listened to on audible recently. 4mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I may try that one, read good things about it, but other than that I don‘t think I‘ll read another novel by her anytime soon! 4mo
mrozzz @BarbaraBB I disliked Evelyn as well so I am definitely done trying Reid! 4mo

So enjoyed this perspective on the very conservative parts of the country which many liberals are always quick to discredit as dangerous for the LGBT+ populations there. The author made a great point about how even though some towns/states are vehemently working against them it is still their home & they want to stay and flourish regardless. I also liked how she described & aligned her transition with her travels across the country for this book.

Wonderful/informative, even fun despite the oft-depressing topics, like the "Bikini Industrial Complex" & the "Giver Syndrome", sisters Emily & Amelia collaborated on a super relatable book. Though it is focused on issues women face & how we can cope with burnout in our professional and personal lives by doing things like not dissing other women based on appearance, it also embraces everyone's hotness, and prioritizing sleep etc— REAL self care.

The Need | Helen Phillips
post image
Panpan

Phillips' coy narration easily manipulates the reader, playing with any sense of grounding one may/may not have as the chapters slide by & more questions come along w/ discomfort. Molly is dedicated to her job as a paleobotanist, trying to make sense of the oddities unburied there, and her job as a mother to two kids under 4. When an intruder gets into her home when she is alone with her kids, she's terrified but fierce. (Cont‘d)

mrozzz The stranger presents an ultimatum. Molly proceeds as if nothing is wrong, calling in a favor with the babysitter & leaves with the "deer". The result shocked then bored me as Molly soon acquiesces to the stranger's presence in her life. Throughout almost nothing else happens and the descriptions especially of her time at work were too vague to get me as excited as the stranger's initial entrance to the book was- until that too fell flat. 5mo

I love finding a novel I can gobble up easily, while feeling so much. Augusten is a riot and a half. So glad I finally found the book with my favorite quote: “I am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.” Though it was a bit slow getting acquainted to his style and manner of speaking, and his absolutely raunchy, morbid humor, a few essays in I was pretty much rapt. Rukhsana‘s parents act so backward, putting her daughter's future & well-being at risk for the sake of keeping their reputation sparkling- but what does a family truly have if their facade is just that and backed by anger and secrets and using religion as an excuse to control and prevent their girl from being who she is? I was so proud of her, how brave & mature she acted in the face of extreme prejudice from the people meant to love her the most.

I am not a mother, I've not had an abortion or a miscarriage or lost a child but... these stories shook me to the core, easily handing me the empathy I needed to be rocked by the good times, and the very bad, had within these pages. 💔♥️💔♥️

Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane

UGH! Such an engaging and funny therapy session, I mean book talk, last night at Books Are Magic— like these kinds of days remind me why I go to events. J. Courtney Sullivan is one of my former writing teachers and we got to catch up afterward, but during she was the perfect backboard to Mary Beth Keane‘s droll/hilarious manner. I started reading her book on the way home yesterday. I‘m hooked & impressed. Can‘t believe I hadn‘t read her before.

sisilia She‘s beautiful! I was staring when she signed my copy at the Expo 😹 5mo
MicheleinPhilly Is Courtney working on a new book? I need a new book! 5mo

Another BookCon for me, another wonderful, exhausting day!! I spent so much time talking to publishing people and new friends, I unfortunately didn‘t make it over to where the Littens were! I hope that everyone who went had a fabulous time, and if you‘re going today, that you snag more books!

TheSpineView Have a good time! 6mo

A fascinating story following the real-world details of the last year of Thomas Sankara's controversial presidency of Burkina Faso, as seen through the eyes of a young FBI agent describing a contract job overseas with the CIA. Anyone with any interest in the world politics of the 1980s would be enthralled by the overall premise. Though my writer brain and the odd presentation not allowing the reader to settle into any present was a major turnoff.

Ahhhhh I felt butterflies I felt joy I had several public laughing fits- this book was all that & a bag of chips. It made me feel as good as To All the Boys I've Loved BeforeAND Fangirl both did. Penny who, let's be clear is wholly unique & likely written with some of Choi's own weird/awesome shine, had a bit of Cath's personality and Lara Jean's confidence + a combination of their humors and awkwardness- she and the book were just... excellent.

MarriedtoMrT This book has been on my radar for some time but your reference to Cath might just have shoved it higher on my TBR! 6mo

OUCH 😭 Swayed by #CoverLove I had no idea where Fisher was going to lead me. She details her journey into sobriety & then into illness, just after befriending a much older woman (in her 60s to Fisher's 30s) who is already dying of metastasized breast cancer. I knew her friend, Alison, would die yet I was not prepared. It's a quick read & a good lesson for anyone, healthy or otherwise, to remind us that we can't make it through this life alone.

Could you imagine how the world might end in nuclear war? I couldn't & it seemed like the author didn't know either. Aside from allusions to big clouds, colder weather & minimal, poisonous rainwater-the "lucky" few in the Swiss countryside seemed to be surviving ok the first few months. While I found this absolutely readable and hard to put down, it was really b/c I was desperate for a dramatic event or two to satiate my investment in their story.

Izai.Amorim The Swiss? They live so isolated in their valleys that I doubt they'd notice the world has ended 😂 6mo
mrozzz Lol! The only reason this crew did was because they got a few breaking news alerts on their cell phones before the internet went out. @Izai.Amorim (edited) 6mo

What do I even say? That though "just" a YA novel this story and main character Layla did a ridiculous job shredding my heart? Well it did & this book isn't "just" anything. If forced from your home in the middle of the night to be placed into a camp, how would you feel? Ahmed took on such a hot subject to point out the US' history of stripping citizens of their rights during wartime to show how easily our present administration could do the same.

Lovesbooks87 This was one of the most powerful books that I have read this year. I can even imagine this happening to me and my family. This book scared me because I felt like it could happen in our society today. I just hope it never does! 6mo
mrozzz @Lovesbooks87 that‘s great that it was so impactful for you. It scared me as well and there were several moments I gasped and had to take a break from reading, but I so so appreciated that this book was written. 6mo
Branwen I just finished this one recently too! I'm still shook up by it! So relevant and powerful! 6mo
Josiedlove I finished it last week... Mad me a lot & what‘s going on in our world today... A great book!!! 6mo
