A deeply researched thriller that pits a young intelligence officer against the hermit kingdom of North Korea in a search for her missing sister. A few far-fetched plot points prove occasionally distracting, but all in all this was a highly readable story, and worth it for the detailed depiction of an enigmatic and brutal regime.

2nd half of book was great. A 450 pager which could have been 300.

A stretch in places, it‘s strength lies in the depiction of North Korea. This is where the book really shines, as well thought out and researched. For the most part I had a hard time putting this down!

A book, rain, and cats on a sick day. What could be better? (Other than not being sick. 😂)

Fun thriller for a lazy summer day. Be sure to suspend all realities especially the parts where a new cia recruit would become involved at a high level. But the most interesting parts of the book were the North Korean aspects from Mrs. Moon‘s and Cho‘s perspectives. It‘s clear that the author did his research. I hope there is a second book bc this feels incomplete.

D. B. John‘s timely international thriller uses his knowledge of the North Korean regime to gripping effect, featuring two characters wounded by the regime and a plot that‘s built around Kim Jong-il‘s 2010 nuclear testing programme. However the final quarter over-eggs the adversity that Jenna and Cho face and I wasn‘t wholly convinced by Jenna‘s CIA training but the book ends with a set up for a sequel that I will definitely read.

While well researched and extremely engaging for its portrayal of life in North Korea, it falls rather flat at the end. It did keep me going until the end, however.
