The Big Money
The Big Money | John Dos Passos
8 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
THE BIG MONEY completes John Dos Passos's three-volume "fable of America's materialistic success and moral decline" (American Heritage) and marks the end of "one of the most ambitious projects that an American novelist has ever undertaken" (Time). Here we come back to America after the war and find a nation on the upswing. Industrialism booms. The stock market surges. Lindbergh takes his solo flight. Henry Ford makes automobiles. From New York to Hollywood, love affairs to business deals, it is a country taking the turns too fast, speeding toward the crash of 1929. Ultimately, whether the novels are read together or separately, they paint a sweeping portrait of collective America and showcase the brilliance and bravery of one of its most enduring and admired writers.

Writing a portrait of an entire country, spanning three decades is a big job. But in my view, now that Dos Passos has mentioned the small, Minnesotan, liberal arts college I attended, he has succeeded in being all-encompassing! 🎓 😁

BarbaraBB That is such a coincidence. I love it when that happens. 4y

Mehso-so

Well, I finished it, and the book is now four days overdue! The Big Money is explicitly about just that, essentially the forces of capitalism on shaping America. The Big Problem? After devoting over 1200 pages of my reading attention to this trilogy, I think it could‘ve had greater scope. There are no immigrant or African American stories, which to a 21st century reader looks like a huge oversight. Dos Passos‘ reach may have exceeded his grasp.

This copy of the USA trilogy is due back to the library on Monday & I have no renewals left. Was going to finish reading 3rd book this weekend but then my brother fell & broke his face & got a serious concussion so I‘ve been dealing with that instead. I‘ve already done my due diligence to #modernlibrarytop100 project by reading the 1st book. Noticing more flaws as I continue. A mere 120 pgs from the end of a 1240 pg marathon! What should I do?!

BookishMarginalia I hope your brother is all better soon 💜 — my recommendation is to keep the book and finish it; just pay the overdue fine. 5y
DivineDiana Best wishes for your brother. ❤️ 5y
twohectobooks @BookishMarginalia @DivineDiana thank you! It never really occurred to me that a person could break their face! He will be recovering for quite a while but should be ok. 5y
batsy Oh no! That sounds so painful. Best wishes to your brother and hope the healing process is swift. 5y

I usually watch tv on Friday nights, BUT:
1) it was a super loud day at work and I want QUIET
2) I really want to read something new and I need to finish at least two of these before I‘ll let myself start another book, so let‘s do this.

This is really feeling like a marathon now. I started the first book of the trilogy on December 31 and I don‘t think I‘ll finish the third book before early March. Looking forward to reading something new.. #modernlibrarytop100

Pickpick

Review for the trilogy, since the 1,001 List counts it as one:
This is a sweeping slice-of-life epic and the main character, even though you aren‘t fully aware of it, is America as a whole. It‘s hopeful, hopeless, funny, infuriating, sad...honestly, it‘s one of the most true-to-life books I‘ve read. The good guy/gal doesn‘t always get the American Dream. (I had to use google b/c my copies aren‘t a matching set! 😭)
134/1,001 #1001Books

AshleyHoss820 *Side note: this series was written during the late 20s-early 30s. They‘re pretty free with the racial slurs...😕😕😕 It felt like 1919 was the worst of the three... 6y
Graywacke That‘s a lot for one book on the 1001 list. Great review 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Graywacke Thank you very much! Yes, it was!! I‘m starting Swann‘s Way, which is volume one of Proust‘s seven-volume In Search of Lost Time series. They also count THAT as one book! All 3,000+ pages of it! 😱😊 (edited) 6y
Graywacke @AshleyHoss820 ah, Proust. Should count as about 20 books based in sentence complexity. Enjoy. Love Swan‘s Way. A favorite. 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Graywacke I‘ve been hearing that! I‘m glad I decided to go with one volume at a time! 😄 I‘m really looking forward to it, though! I feel it will be a real feather in my cap! 😊 6y

I‘m going to play catch-up for the #150PnPCoverParty 😊

💰💰💰Money! I haven‘t started this one yet (still on book 2, 1919) but if the USA isn‘t about money/capitalism, I don‘t know who is! 😂😂

Side Note: There‘s a freaking sticker in the middle of my book cover!! 🤬🤬🤬

CrowCAH Yay, thanks for joining! 😊 I agree; bad stickers!!! 6y
