An ultra-gritty piece of contemporary Swedish noir, set in a decrepit, highly atmospheric 1930s Stockholm that is a far cry from the modern, egalitarian capital city of today. The writing's on the wall for Harry Kvist. Once a notorious boxer, he nowspends his days drinking, and his nights chasing debts amongst the pimps, prostitutes and petty thieves of 1930s Stockholm. When women can't satisfyhim, men can. But one biting winter's night he pays a threatening visit to adebtor named Zetterberg, and when the man is found dead shortlyafterwards, all eyes are on Kvist. Determined to avoid yet another stint in prison, Kvist sets out to track downthe only person who can clear his name. His hunt will lead him from the city'sslums, gangster hideouts and gambling dens to its most opulent hotels andelite nightclubs. It will bring him face to face with bootleggers and whores, aristocrats and murderers. It will be the biggest fight of his life. Blending noir with gritty violence, Clinch is a visceral, compulsive thriller thatpacks a punch and leaves you reeling."

I've put my photo of a Stockholm tram in a 1920s filter, which almost fits this super noir crime fiction (set in the 1930s, but there was no 1930s filter...)

AlaMich I thought it wasn‘t bad, but the premise was so fascinating that I was disappointed it wasn‘t better. 8mo

I requested that the library purchase this right before the pandemic and then forgot about it. This first of a trilogy is gritty noir set in Sweden in 1932, with a queer protagonist. So yeah, I‘m pretty sure it‘s a one-of-a-kind!😄 #lgbtqia #nelson #dogsoflitsy

Bette What a glorious dog! ❤️🐶 3y
wanderinglynn Someone seems to be trying to ignore you! What a beautiful pup! ❤️🐶 3y
AlaMich @Bette Thank you! He‘s our big goofy greyhound baby! 3y
AlaMich @wanderinglynn He‘s trying to be all nonchalant, like he‘s not super excited that his pic is going up on Litsy! 😂 3y
elkeOriginal What gorgeous coloring your dog has! 😍 3y

I'm calling it a day on this one (179 pages, somewhere between bailed and so-so). I admire the descriptions and noir details of 1930s Stockholm (author studied history). Wry protagonist darkly sympathetic. But the care taken to describe the settings stifles the action. He encounters people in his search for 'Sonja the bandy-legged whore' but has no strong connections. Very gritty. One for noir fans to try.

Going to Stockholm with this gritty but compelling read... "A few degrees colder and it would be snowing instead." #photoadaynov16 #chillyreads

This is next in my mini crime binge 😉🕵. Fen is extraordinary. Shelter and Marie sound fabulous too and sit on my shelf, looking at me. When to fit all of these in? 📚😬 #photoadayNov16 #onewordtitles

Noir set in Stockholm in the 1930s, with an ex-boxer as a reluctant detective trying to clear his name. Some events regarding consent may be triggering. NetGalley ARC.
