Beneath the Earth
Beneath the Earth | John Boyne
2 posts | 4 to read
In this collection of twelve dark, unerring and surprising short stories, John Boyne explores the extremities of the human condition in all its brilliance and brutality. The secrets we keep and the ways in which they shape us, the impossibility of shared loss, the lengths we will go to in order to protect our families and the distance we will run to protect ourselves. Drawing on a host of enthralling characters e" a farmer, a cuckold and a teenager exploring his sexuality; good parents, bad parents, writers and soldiers; a student, a rent boy and a hitman e" Boyne examines the hopeful and the damaged without prejudice or judgement. This, his first collection of short stories, is some of John Boynee(tm)s finest writing to date. It includes e~Rest Daye(tm) which won the 2015 Writing.ie Short Story of the Year award in Ireland.

Thank you so much @LoveToReadLiveToRead for such a pretty notebook! Can't wait to fill the pages with bookish notes and those magnetic clips are Perfect for my work and books, too ;D
Was surprised with the King but it's delightfully grim ;p I'm always looking for more Irish writers. Excited to read the tagged book 💖💖
Thanks @CSeydel for your kind patience & hosting

BookishMe @LoveToReadLiveToRead looking forward to it ;D 6y
Gaylagal2 @bookishme So glad to see enjoying your gifts. Where is the picture and the thanks for the beautiful box I sent you months ago? I thought it was a swap, not just one way. Take good care 6y
BookishMe @Gaylagal2 I owe you a long overdue email to thank you for the wonderful selection. Did you get the books I sent via TBD? 6y
Gaylagal2 No I did not and an email is not necessary as its been over 2 months. Take care (edited) 6y
BookishMe @Gaylagal2 will check with TBD. Actually the box arrived last month and I haven't removed items from inside as I was waiting for you to receive the books I sent. 6y
BookishMe @Gaylagal2 @MicrobeMom I have forwarded TBD's reply to both of you. If items were sent to different address, I am more than willing to send back the box I received. I admit I had dropped the ball on this. But I don't appreciate the implication I'd had ripped off anyone. I certainty won't be able to enjoy the items sent to me after the tone of the comments above 6y
MicrobeMom @bookishme I am sorry for the problem. I will check my email and get back to you. 6y
BookishMe @MicrobeMom thanks! I was in the wrong, not keeping up with the updates ;(( 6y
BookishMe @readinginthedark above is the exchange between me and the match. Hope you can understand why I intend to send her box back . Her comments have left a sour taste and I know I will always associate her gifts with the tone above ;(( I can't help if I am tad sensitive about this. 6y
readinginthedark Just read your email. She had emailed me yesterday as well, but I just saw it. I'm so sorry this all happened, and I wish one or both of you would have contacted me sooner. But I know life gets in the way. I'm guilty of this, too. Let me respond to her email and we can try to sort this out. You are, of course, welcome to send the box back if that's what you want, but I would love for both of you to somehow reclaim positive vibes for this swap. 6y
BookishMe @readinginthedark I am truly sorry that our lapses have also affected you. Not fair to you and @MicrobeMom when the swap is meant to be good fun with best intentions. I will keep your words in mind cos I now realize it's not just about me and the match. Thank you for your thoughtful response 6y
Gaylagal2 I had my say and I'm over it and all is fine here. I hold no ill wills and want you to keep the box, enjoy it. Those things were made special for you and I want you to keep them. Please don't spend the money and ship them back...keep them and remember that box was made just for you S. Take care 🤙 6y
readinginthedark Don't be sorry. I know it's difficult to navigate these things. I hope that you start to feel better about the situation. Never hesitate to talk things out! 6y
BookishMe @readinginthedark I am grateful for your encouraging words, which mean a lot to me. 6y

Feeling under the weather today, getting over a bout of suspected tonsillitis so John Boyne is keeping me company with this short story collection.
I‘ve just started one starring none other than Agatha Christie!

CaitlinR Hope you feel better. 7y
