Poems That Make Grown Women Cry
Poems That Make Grown Women Cry | Anthony Holden, Ben Holden
5 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Following the success of their anthology Poems That Make Grown Men Cry, father-and-son team Anthony and Ben Holden, working with Amnesty International, have asked the same revealing question of 100 remarkable women. What poem has moved you to tears? The poems chosen range from the eighth century to today, from Rumi and Shakespeare to Sylvia Plath, W.H. Auden to Carol Ann Duffy, Pablo Neruda and Derek Walcott to Imtiaz Dharker and Warsan Shire. Their themes range from love and loss, through mortality and mystery, war and peace, to the beauty and variety of nature. From Yoko Ono to Judi Dench, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to Elena Ferrante, Carol Ann Duffy to Kaui Hart Hemmings, and Joan Baez to Nikki Giovanni, this unique collection delivers private insights into the minds of women whose writing, acting, and thinking are admired around the world.

I appreciated this collection of poems, each selected by one of a diverse group of women. Each poem came with an intro from the woman who selected it, describing how they came across it or why it moved them. Those intros added a lot of depth to my appreciation and understanding of the selections. There is a companion, Poems That Make Grown Men Cry, that I am looking forward to picking up.

I‘ve been ill again and on a bit of a downer and unable to read for any period so the last lines of Funeral Blues is where my head went with this quote prompt... tagged book is an anthology that contains this and many others that hold true to the title ! #quotsyjan18 #nothing

Dulcinella Hope you soon feel better. And indeed: Audens poem is wonderful as is this quote ❤️ 6y
Itchyfeetreader @Dulcinella thank you. I‘m at the point where I mostly just feel sorry for myself!! 6y

I enjoyed the book for lots of reasons. The poems themselves, of course. Many were old friends; some were new to me & didn‘t much affect me, but other new ones did bring me to tears. So the poetry alone is worth the read, & I‘ve added several poets to my list of ones to look up & read more. But in addition to the poetry, many of the introductions were lovely too, & have led to another list, of women I want to know more about and read more of.

So, this is related to the first photo I posted here when I joined. 😊 I only started reading this 2 days ago. This is a wondeful, wonderful book! 😍 Makes me think about my favorite poem 'Dream Girl' by Carl Sandburg. 😘 What poems make you cry, everyone? Care to share? 😊
