The Position: A Novel | Meg Wolitzer
5 posts | 14 read | 11 to read
Meg Wolitzer’s “hilariously moving, sharply written novel” (USA TODAY), hailed by critics and loved by readers worldwide, with its “dead-on observations about sex, marriage, and the family ties that strangle and bind” (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Crackling with intelligence and humor, The Position is the masterful story of one extraordinary family at the hilarious height of the sexual revolution—and through the thirty-year hangover that followed. In 1975, Paul and Roz Mellow write a bestselling Joy of Sex-type book that mortifies their four school-aged children and ultimately changes the shape of the family forever. Thirty years later, as the now dispersed family members argue over whether to reissue the book, we follow the complicated lives of each of the grown children and their conflicts in love, work, marriage, parenting, and, of course, sex—all shadowed by the indelible specter of their highly sexualized parents. Insightful, panoramic, and compulsively readable, The Position is an American original.

Bailedbailed

Meg Wolitzer is getting quite a buzz these days so I thought I‘d introduce myself to her work. This book, unlike most of her others, was available immediately so I downloaded the audio version. The narrator is fine, but I‘m not interested in the characters, the story or the writing style. Not wanting to judge an author by one book-especially not one with great reviews- I‘ll try again to read another of Wolitzer‘s novels in the future.

Mehso-so

I adore Meg Wolitzer so it pains me to rate this novel as a 'so-so.' It has her signature charm, which I love and the premise was interesting: the children of a couple who wrote an illustrated sex manual (think The Joy of Sex) find it and this discovery changes them all. There was a lot to be desired here though. The plot had great potential, but ultimately didn't go as far as it could have and the character development wasn't very satisfying. 👇

rachellayown Overall a decent novel. (And I still love Meg Wolitzer.) 7y

I don't always enjoy contemporary fiction, but I have enjoyed The Wife and also The Interestings more than I expected I would so when this became available from the library (via Overdrive) I decided to grab it.

Pickpick

Roz and Paul Mellow are famous for their graphic 1970s exploration of sex. 30 years later, their children grapple with that legacy, and their own sex and relationships. The novel's flow felt a little disjointed, but the characters were varied and complex. Also takes stock of the changing sexual and political landscape of the early 21st century. Wolitzer has her finger on the pulse of probing largely ordinary but highly significant circumstances.
