A beautifully illustrated story filled with diversity and imagination. Just lovely.

I loved everything about this one. The illustrations that capture movement brilliantly. The idea of the girl transforming into a tree. The end scene with the crows, which is gorgeous. And these lines that are poetry: Black is the color of my hair./My mother parts it every morning, like opening a window.

Concept #picturebook—colours, seasons—with a difference. Based on empirical evidence, an inquisitive & imaginative child questions what‘s relayed as fact: the sky is sometimes blue, but she sees it change to other colours. How much do you trust what you‘re told but can‘t see—blood inside us is red & it circulates even when we‘re still? Comforting final scene: “Black is the colour of my hair. My mother parts it every morning like opening a window.”

A field of grass looks like a golden ocean. If I built a boat that was light enough, maybe I could sail upon it. Grey clouds. A storm is coming.

I love the sense of movement in this double-page spread. I can feel the water. 🌊

They say blue is the colour of the sky. Which is true today! They say the sea is blue, too. It certainly looks like it from here. But when I hold the water in my hands, it‘s clear as glass. I toss it up in the air to make diamonds.

I had an afternoon filled with gorgeous picture book illustrations. I love this one, from Jillian Tamaki‘s “They Say Blue”, of a girl transforming into a tree. 💚
