They Say Blue
They Say Blue | Jillian Tamaki
8 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
In captivating paintings full of movement and transformation, Tamaki follows a young girl through a year or a day as she examines the colors in the world around her. Egg yolks are sunny orange as expected, yet water cupped in her hands isnt blue like they say. But maybe a blue whale is blue. She doesnt know, she hasnt seen one. Playful and philosophical, They Say Blue is a book about color as well as perspective, about the things we can see and the things we can only wonder at. This first picture book from celebrated illustrator Jillian Tamaki will find equal appreciation among kids and collectors.

#LetsTravelJuly Day 1: Tamaki, the brilliant author-illustrator of this book is from #Canada. This book is not only a celebration of creativity and imagination, it is also a testament to mindfulness and paying close attention to colours, scents, and the passing of the seasons. I loved everything about this one. The illustrations that capture movement brilliantly. The idea of the girl transforming into a tree. The end scene with the crows, which is gorgeous. And these lines that are poetry: Black is the color of my hair./My mother parts it every morning, like opening a window.

Concept #picturebook—colours, seasons—with a difference. Based on empirical evidence, an inquisitive & imaginative child questions what‘s relayed as fact: the sky is sometimes blue, but she sees it change to other colours. How much do you trust what you‘re told but can‘t see—blood inside us is red & it circulates even when we‘re still? Comforting final scene: “Black is the colour of my hair. My mother parts it every morning like opening a window.”

Lindy @pgh.femme Yes! I wonder if anyone has already used any of Tamaki‘s work for tattoo art. It wouldn‘t surprise me. 6y

A field of grass looks like a golden ocean. If I built a boat that was light enough, maybe I could sail upon it. Grey clouds. A storm is coming.

They say blue is the colour of the sky. Which is true today! They say the sea is blue, too. It certainly looks like it from here. But when I hold the water in my hands, it‘s clear as glass. I toss it up in the air to make diamonds.

I had an afternoon filled with gorgeous picture book illustrations. I love this one, from Jillian Tamaki‘s “They Say Blue”, of a girl transforming into a tree. 💚
