Martyn Waites‘s novel (the first in a series) marries thriller and folk horror but because there‘s so much going on it‘s less than the sum of its parts. It has good pacing and there are some creepy moments, but the plot is heavily contrived at times and neither Tom nor Lila quite convince as characters while the antagonist is similarly underdeveloped. It‘s not a bad book, I kept turning the pages, but it wasn‘t as satisfying a read as I‘d hoped.

I believe this series has potential. The book was an easy, fast read, but a bit all over the place, and too many characters. It was like Peter May meets Enid Blyton meets Ann Cleeves, but not quite as good as the aforementioned authors. Based on what I‘ve read the next book is a lot better, and I will definitely read it! An ex-copper works as a bartender in a village, and lots of sinister things are going on. Modern vs tradition. 3+ stars

There I was innocently walking by some shelves at the library, and suddenly saw this orange circle with some text in it. Well, couldn‘t really leave the book there, right? This is how someone could easily kidnap me! Anyone read it?

My easter weekend off work has begun with finishing this enjoyable thriller which has the horror and feel of 'the wicker man' but at times i worried could have drifted towards the comedy of 'hot fuzz'. In the end i think it stayed the right side of the divide for a crime novel and ill definitely look out for more and also now try the authors other pen name tania carver. To summarise hiding undercover cop battles pagan religion baddies - good fun.

The opening chapter to this book drew me in immediately. It is not even a full page but it was enough to grab my attention. The story was good. It was well written. I think there was some missed potential. I think they could have gone more in to the religion and practices used.
The book is quite long and it was quite drawn out. There was more action at the end. . I would recommend his book but I think it had some missed opportunities.

This is the first chapter of my current read. I was literally drawn in from the get to. I‘m enjoying it so far! Blurb: The Cornish village of St Petroc is the sort of place where people come to hide.
