Mittee
Mittee | Daphne Rooke
1 post
First published in 1952, Mittee was an international bestseller. Set in late nineteenth-century Transvaal, it dramatizes the intense, ambiguous love-hate relationship between Selina, a young colored servant girl, and her privileged white mistress, Mittee, and explores the roles forced upon the two women, fierce rivals for the attentions of the same man. Juxtaposing violence and sexuality the author crosses gender and racial boundaries in this powerful exposure of a patriarchal, puritanical and divided society.

I know the #oldcoolbooks challenge is over but wanted to share my finds from the library sale today.
Anyone familiar with Mittee or Tess of the Storm Country. Apparently the latter was made into a film. I have to say I mostly picked them for their covers.

DivineDiana Not familiar, but do love the covers! 6y
Louise Something about those covers is reminiscent of a more innocent Age, don't you think? Perhaps that's why we are so charmed by them. 6y
rubyslippersreads ❤️❤️❤️ the cover of Mittee! Tess sounds familiar, but I haven't read either one. 6y
Linsy I‘ve never heard of them, but I love these covers as well!! I‘m torn. I can‘t decide if I love the top right or bottom one more. 😍🤩😍 6y
