If you are looking for a book that will not have you question faith and truths, do not read this book. If you want a book about what some people will do to avoid change and to grip the ‘power‘ they hold dear verses those brave souls who seek the truth therefore challenging that authority, read this book! This book took me a while to read because of the horrifying Pentients used to curb freewill **shudders**. Well done Max Gladstone...well done.

Every few months, a read another Craft Sequence book, and am delighted anew by the clever world building, great characters, casual diversity, and excellent fantasy storytelling. Full Fathom Five is no exception, bringing back some old favorites but building out the setting in cool new directions. Honestly, this one might be my favorite of the series to date.

Gladstone‘s books are so diverse, so I did my best to make my #HeadCasting for Full Fathom Five follow suit.

Kai Pohala - Maori actress Keisha Castle-Hughes

Teo Batan (character from book 2 in an extended cameo) - America Ferrera just like before

Izza - Sennia Nanua from The Girl With All the Gifts

Edmond Margot - put Matt Lucas in a green velvet suit and you‘ve got the perfect Margot

Jace - Maori actor Cliff Curtis

Mako - Mako obviously

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Kevarian - Vanessa Redgrave just like in the first book. Cat - Elizabeth Debicki. 7y

Three Parts Dead was a legal thriller with vampires and gargoyles where the lawyers wield lightning knives.

Two Serpents Rise was a Chinatown-esque water-rights noir with giant snake gods and scorpion people.

Full Fathom Five is a tale of corporate espionage with stone Tiki monsters and poetry slams and offices inside a volcano. It was great! Read these books!

Also it was neat that the main character is transgender and it‘s not a big deal.

mcipher Wow these sound insanely detailed and fascinating! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @mcipher An excellent series so far and each book has been pretty self-contained with a whole new cast of characters. Looking forward to the rest! 7y

The Craft Sequence is so good and book 3 (or 5 depending) in this series about magical lawyers in the aftermath of the God Wars has already introduced a beautiful and deadly island nation and some fascinating characters.

One complaint: I‘m not sure who these two ladies on the cover are. Surely one is Kai, but she hasn‘t been described physically, so I‘m not sure which one she could be.

I really enjoyed this book, as I have the first two in the series. Gladstone has a very distinctive writing style and I find I am really pulled into his books. I'm excited to start the next one, except I think I need something different to "cleanse my palate." ?

Lunchtime reading is definitely the best part of working from home!

💕📚📘😍

Bookgirl Yes!! Except sometimes that turns into afternoon reading. Oh who am I kidding - that's still a good thing! 8y
thec0zy @Bookgirl for real! It's always so hard to move away!! 8y
LauraBrook Can I ask what you do? Due to some health issues, I need a work from home job that's not customer service and I'm running low on ideas. If it's too personal, that's okay, just thought I'd ask! 8y

Bookgirl @LauraBrook not sure you're asking me but I'll chime in! I teach online writing courses, college level. If you have a masters degree it's an option for you 8y
thec0zy @LauraBrook no problem 😊 I'm an IT Project Manager and Business Analyst, so I do a lot of teleconferencing meetings, project coordination, quality assurance testing, and chasing down clients and developers (via email and phone). 8y
thec0zy @LauraBrook I would definitely suggest the IT/tech field for stay at home jobs though. They tend to pay well, but the downside is that the work-life boundaries are super blurred. And I had no IT experience before I kinda blundered my way into this job. 8y
thec0zy @Bookgirl that sounds great! Although I would imagine you have some college writing horror stories. 8y
LauraBrook @Bookgirl Thanks for chiming in! I don't have a Masters degree, just a BA in English. @thec0zy Thank you so much! I don't really have any IT or Tech experience, but I'm way open to taking classes! And I already have a work/life blurred boundary (massage therapist) so that's okay, I'm used to it. Still going to do massage, but it needs to be way part time. Thanks again for the info, I'll be poking around online v soon! 8y
thec0zy @Bookgirl No problem! I'm happy to help, and let me know if you need pointers to positions. Business Analyst is a fairly flexible one, you could make a decent case for the analysis skills inherent in an English degree being an asset to a business analyst position. 8y

The 5th book of Gladstone's The Craft Sequence just came out, along with news of more to come, so I decided it was time to dip back into the series. This is the third book by publishing date and fifth by the timeline. More importantly, it's another winner. This one is about belief, loyalty, and change; it also has women as the main characters. Looking forward to more!
