Inappropriation
Inappropriation: A Novel | Lexi Freiman
9 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
A wildly irreverent take on the coming-of-age story that turns a search for belonging into a riotous satire of identity politics Starting at a prestigious private Australian girls school, fifteen-year-old Ziggy Klein is confronted with an alienating social hierarchy that hurls her into the arms of her grades most radical feminists. Tormented by a burgeoning collection of dark, sexual fantasies, and a biological essentialist mother, Ziggy sets off on a journey of self-discovery that moves from the Sydney drag scene to the extremist underbelly of the Internet. As PC culture collides with her friends morphing ideology and her parents kinky sex life, Ziggys understanding of gender, race, and class begins to warp. Ostracized at school, she seeks refuge in Donna Haraways seminal feminist text, A Cyborg Manifesto, and discovers an indisputable alternative identity. Or so she thinks. A controversial Indian guru, a transgender drag queen, and her own Holocaust-surviving grandmother propel Ziggy through a series of misidentifications, culminating in a date-rape revenge plot so confused, it just might work. Uproariously funny, but written with extraordinary acuity about the intersections of gender, sexual politics, race, and technology, Inappropriation is literary satire at its best. With a deft finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist, Lexi Freiman debuts on the scene as a brilliant and fearless new talent.

Mehso-so

⭐⭐⭐ Alright...this book made me so uncomfortable. It was absurdly oppressive in all of its red tape that I felt like I should repent for being who I am as a person. I'm not sure who could read this as an not feel that way. Honestly the ending and Hitler Youth might be the only reason this book got 3 stars to begin with. Unless this was written as a farce and meant to be backhandedly funny and even then I still wouldn't recommend this.

How is it that this book is both hysterical and pissing me off at the same time? #confused

Ziggy's friends are SO insufferable with their "let's not offend anyone by being offended by EVERYTHING, yet indirectly offending everyone in the process anyway" mind set and jargon is driving me batshit. #ihatethesecharacters

The politics and red tape in this book created by Ziggy's friends makes my damn head hurt and makes me wish they'd fall off the pages. Especially since they ARE what they are supposedly rallying against. [Insert eye roll here]

This book is something else....definitely, something else.

I'm hoping to finish at least one of these books this weekend. What's on your weekend TBR?

Shae_Purcell I'm hoping to finish The Fiery Cross this weekend. Finally! Plus a few chapters in some of my non-fiction books. 6y
sebrittainclark I'm hoping to finish Record of a Spaceborn Few and start rereading Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince. Although, I also just got Tempests and Slaughter on Libby so that's in the running now too! 6y
BarbaraBB Snap as well! 6y

2BR02B @spharo I've had Outlander on my TBR shelf for YEARS now. Yet I keep visiting the library every week instead. 😫 Why? 6y
2BR02B @sebrittain how are you liking Record of a Spaceborn Few? I still need to pick up a copy, but it bothers me that the cover design is different from the first two books. 6y
2BR02B @BarbaraBB what do you think? I'm 100 pages in, and it's reading like a fairly boilerplate procedural IMO. Also not crazy about books that hinge the plot on the main character making stupid decisions. 6y
BarbaraBB I‘ll let you know, I really just started! 6y
sebrittainclark @2BR02B I'm looking it so far, but I am only a few chapters in. I was worried about the cover, but I've been buying the American editions, so the covers are still similar for me. 6y

It‘s a freaky book for freaky times. Glad this one randomly showed up on my radar as an event I might be interested in (thanks Facebook).

Emma Cline (The Girls) asked Lexi Freiman about her process and why she ended up writing this satirical novel focused on a 15yo girl in an Australian private school. Freiman‘s answers were so thoughtful & sincere. Her style is awesome. Based on how much I loved Jen Beagin, I really expect to like it!
