A fantastic book. Simply the best price of historical fiction I have read in years. Great characters thrown into terrible situations, great pacing and just enough historical detail to make you feel you are there but not overwhelm. Felt like I lived the Civil War with the characters. It is however graphically violent and contains sexual violence. Highly recommend this one, it was a treat to read.

Epic. The tag line calls this a novel of the civil war, that doesn‘t do this novel justice. The story follows the Hancock family in northwest Arkansas as the war begins. The 2 older brothers and the father head off to war while mother, sister, and younger brother stay at home. By wars end the farm is gone and no one knows who‘s alive or dead or where they might be. The devastating effects of war and the belief in family drive this story.
