Smoke City

From the author of The Mercy of the Tide comes another gorgeously written, genre-defying page-turner. Marvin Deitz--record store owner, hospital volunteer, remorseful reincarnation of Joan of Arc's executioner--heads to Los Angeles to ask forgiveness from a woman claiming to be Joan; he's picked up hitchhiking by Mike Vale, a self-destructive alcoholic painter traveling to his ex-wife's funeral, and as they move through a California landscape populated with "smokes" (ghostly apparitions that've inexplicably begun appearing throughout the southwestern US), each seeks absolution in his own way.

He was out the door five minutes later, blood wetting his sock, cold coffee and aspirin hammering a bitter waltz somewhere below his heart.

A barreling blast through a ghost (“smoke”) ridden LA with two compulsively readable antiheroes at the forefront, “Smoke City” may be a bit repetitive with presenting its themes and scenarios, but this road trip and flashback heavy novel had me cackling and in awe of Rosson‘s inventive ideas and satisfying intertwining of narratives.

If you want to read about an alcoholic ex-painter, a wannabe ghost hunter, and a reincarnation of Joan of Arc‘s executioner going on a road trip together, then you should definitely read this book.

Thought for sure this would make the TOB long list AND IT DID NOT 😮 Now, perversely, I feel I must read it. So Dear Reader, I bought it. I first heard about it on the 9/11/18 @ReadingEnvy podcast as recommended by @Booksndogs . Sounds absolutely bonkers in a good way!

ReadingEnvy I was waiting for it to hit the Tob too! 6y
Booksndogs At least now we don‘t have to mourn Its not winning the TOB ;) 6y
Ruthiella @Booksndogs That is a good way of looking at it! 😀 6y

Small press discovery! Reincarnated executioner of Joan of Arc and alcoholic formerly-famous painter go on a redemptive road trip to ghost ridden L.A. Story goes back and forth in their lives. Deep thoughts yet still a hint of a Hunter S Thompson vibe. Sounds like it can‘t work, but it does, thanks to great writing. Book cover gives you an idea . Loved it, as my sticky tabs attest!

BkClubCare This sounds fun and different. 4y
