A lot of great writers consider this one of their favorite novels of all time, and it's easy to see why. Ginger Coffey is a down-on-his-luck Irish immigrant to Canada trying to live out the archetypal "American Dream". By turns selfish, blinkered and self-pitying, but also sensitive, compassionate and dedicated, Coffey is a fully human character Moore has managed to construct from a bevy of cliches. I can see why he was a favorite of Graham Greene
