Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman
Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman | Stefan Zweig
9 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
A fateful encounter in a Montecarlo casino sees an English widow mesmerised by a young Polish artistocrat. A frenzied twenty-four hours ensue, as both struggle in the grip of irresistible obsessions that drive them to defy the conventions of society, and to risk everything they possess. This is one of the best-loved novellas by Stefan Zweig, a renowned master of the form - its frenetic pace, sparkling prose and acute psychological insight have made this unforgettable story a classic.

#novemberbythenumbers and I now only have 24 hours left in Galway so I am off to explore. Tomorrow i head to Dublin.

Cinfhen Yay for you!!! How's the weather been? 6y
Jas16 @Cinfhen I have really lucked out. Before I left the forecast said it was supposed to rain every day so I was prepared for that. Most of the rain has been over night other than the day I was on trains for close to six hours. It is colder than I am used to but that doesn‘t bother me at all. 6y
Cinfhen Glad you're having good weather days💚 6y

JaclynW You are lucky to have good weather! What did you like best in Galway? 6y
Jas16 @JaclynW I honestly just loved wandering especially by the water. 6y
JaclynW @Jas16 It looked like a fun city. We only got to spend an evening here. We spent most of that day at Kylemore Abbey, which I don't regret at all, that place was amazing! I want to go back to Galway and explore more though. It is fun to wander anywhere in Ireland. I did a lot of that in Dublin. 6y

Pickpick

This novella was my Z for #litsyatoz. A slim, simple story without much to it, it was elevated to a pick by the writing.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've never read any Zweig, but Wes Anderson said his writing inspired The Grand Budapest Hotel, so I need to at some point. 7y

This coffee place is one of my new favorites spots to read. It is super modern but housed in a house built in 1910.

I think that after 6 weeks I am finally getting the hang of this year. I am doing yoga, working full time, cooking and finally making time to focus on reading. This may be my 9th book of 2017.

Pickpick

I have a lot of bias towards Stefan Zweig, so you should know that my rating is probably what it is because of this bias. Having said that, the beauty of Zweig's writing and his almost intimate way of exploring people can't be denied, and it's on display again in this novella. There's one part about hands that I read over and over again because it was so beautiful. His writing really does make my heart full.

Mehso-so

Reading this book was like swimming in Jello toward the Emerald City. The writing was for the most part lyrical but I could only take small doses. I could see a denouement in the distance but the words held the narrative down. What kept me going was that it was a novella and I knew the end was in sight. Then, too, it was my first time reading Zweig. I felt I had to give him the courtesy of finishing the book.
