The Korean Cinderella
The Korean Cinderella | Shirley Climo
9 posts | 6 read
Climo and Heller conflate several Korean variants of Cinderella to offer up the story of Pear Blossom, a lovely girl who is sorely mistreated by her nasty stepmother and stepsister. At once comfortingly familiar and intriguingly exotic, the text is especially noteworthy for its instructive but unobtrusive incorporation of Korean words.Publishers Weekly. Hellers paintings are exotically lush and colorful as well as engaging. An agreeable retelling of the Cinderella story. BL. Notable 1994 Children's Trade Books in Social Studies (NCSS/CBC)

Pickpick

The Korean Cinderella by Shirley Climo, 1996 is a traditional book about a young girl in Korean who has a similar story then the one of Cinderella. Its a very beautiful book, with wonderful illustrations and Korean culture throughout.
Blurb: If this is read to children that are familiar with the original Cinderella story they could make connections between the two.

“‘Ewha! Ewha! Ewha!‘ croaked the giant frog down below. That is as it was long ago, and as it should be. For in Korea, Ewha means ‘Pear Blossom‘.”

The illustrations were very bright and colorful. I would use this book to compare it to other versions of Cinderella and ask my students to talk about the different cultures.

This book tells the true story of Cinderella in a different culture. It is very interesting to see how different cultures use the same story. I liked this version and thought it was very unique.

I really liked that this fairy tale is based on Cinderella but was changed so that Koreans can relate more to this story.

Great Cinderella. The author notes are informative! The illustrations are great. Great opportunity to compare to the original story or other versions of Cinderella. Now, I will read the Chinese Cinderella.

So many wonderful multicultural Cinderella stories! We have used these in so many creative ways in my gifted program, but I haven‘t read them all!!! Tonight I am going to read a few.
