David The Great
David The Great: Deconstructing the Man After God's Own Heart | Mark Rutland
5 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
KING DAVID was a complicated, conflicted man of flesh. But too often he is viewed as an Americanized shepherd boy on a Sunday school felt board or a New Testament saint alongside the Virgin Mary. Not only does this neglect one of the Bibles most complex stories of sin and redemption; it also bypasses the gritty life lessons inherent in the amazing true story of David. Mark Rutland shreds the felt-board character, breaks down the sculpted marble statue, and unearths the real David of the Bible. Both noble and wretched, neither a saint nor a monster, at times victorious and other times a failure, David was through it all a man after Gods own heart.

This books went far above and beyond my expectations. It gives a timeline of events and also snippets of wisdom - what we can learn from David's strengths and weakness, his rises and falls. Such a meaningful and worthwhile read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. —David the Great, Psalm 23: 6

"God‘s logic is not our logic. He is not bothered by how the world perceives His acts. The Holy Spirit has a long résumé of leading God‘s children in unusual ways to accomplish His will, and that list is only getting longer. Trust in God‘s leading. Trust in His word to you. Do not concern yourself with trifles such as safety or the opinions others. Whatsoever He saith unto thee, do it."

When God placed Adam in paradise, He gave him the job of tending to the land. Work is not part of the curse. Work is a gift. God knew work gave Adam a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Great leaders are great workers. Your work ethic will have far more to do with your success than your gifts. Learn to work, and learn to love work. Manage yourself before you ever try to manage others.

Your life in the future will be impacted by the choices you make and by what you learn now. What you learn today about yourself and about life, discipline, hope, truth, character, and God will affect your tomorrow more than you realize. The blemishes we paint over, the cracks we plaster over, and the shortcuts we take so that we never really have to deal with the issue at hand all have the capacity to deeply wound our future.

Saul didn‘t know what we know all these years later: David was simply a magnet for the supernatural. Music, lions, bears, Goliath . . . God was steering David through it all, including the battles Saul intended to be the death of David. In fact, not only was David surviving it all, but with each victory David increased both his following and his fame. Everyone wanted to stand with the kid who always won.
