Out of the Forest
Out of the Forest | Gregory Smith

'The most remarkable story I've ever heard' Richard Fidler For ten years a man calling himself Will Power lived in near-total isolation in northern New South Wales, foraging for food, eating bats and occasionally trading for produce. But who was this mysterious man who roamed the forest and knew all of its secrets and riddles? Some people thought he might be Jesus. Others feared he was a more sinister figure. The truth was that he was neither miraculous nor malevolent, but he was, most certainly, gifted. And when he finally emerged from the forest, emaciated and close to death, he was determined to reclaim his real name and 'give society another chance'. Today, Dr Gregory Peel Smith, who left school at the age of fourteen, has a PhD and teaches in the Social Sciences at university. His profoundly touching and uplifting memoir is at once a unique insight into how far off track a life can go and powerful reminder that we can all find our way back if we pause for a moment in the heart of the forest.

#7books7days Day 7

Books that made an impression on me.

Ok so I‘ve cheated and made it 2 books as they have a similar theme. One had a happy ending and one didn‘t.

Pickpick

This book reduced me to tears many times. It is fascinating, heartbreaking and inspiring.
This man is a 'Forgotten Australian' who because of trauma and anguish exiles himself from society. The world is full of forgotten, invisible, misunderstood, lonely people who we judge because of their appearance or circumstances.
This is one of my favourite books of the year and I know I will think about it for a long time.

I now regret not seeing Gregory when he came to a library nearby to me to talk about this book. I hadn't read it yet but it sounded interesting, and now I'm glad I picked it up. It was a fucking heavy read, and I resonated a little more than I like, but reading about a guy who somewhat went the hermit life I often dream of has centred me a bit. Plus his achievements after dealing with PTSD and homelessness are incredible.
