Fantastic night out with @MrsMalaprop listening to Hannah Kent talk about her new book, a memoir. It‘s a quiet book detailing her Rotary trip to Iceland for a year at 18yrs old which helped her decide to pursue writing as a career seriously. It‘s also where Kent became obsessed with the execution of Agnes Magnusdottir, inspiring her book Burial rights, which she details in depth. I adored Burial Rights and I thoroughly enjoyed this. #OzNonfiction

MrsMalaprop I have just finished speed-reading my book club book, so can get onto Hannah now 😁 2w

3 siblings are placed into foster care. Their biological father is a narcissist, who only sees the world as it pertains to him and sees his children as property. Their mother is severely mentally unstable and both of them are Christian fanatics. The children win the lottery when they are placed in the home of the Blaine‘s who are total opposites. They are hard working publicans, Australian bogans, rough around the edges, but with hearts of gold ⬇️

Rissreadswithcats And unlimited amounts of love to give. This book is a prime example of how sometimes facts are stranger than fiction. But the book reminds us that for every bad egg out there, there is a good egg to even it out. #Oznonfiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #MonthlyNonfiction @julieclair (edited) 4mo
Centique This sounds wonderful! Great review 🙌Stacking. 4mo
CarolynM I read the condensed version of the story in the Age‘s Weekend Magazine a few weeks ago. It was quite startling - as you say truth can be stranger than fiction. And Jackie Weaver‘s involvement😳🤯 4mo

Yeah, I don‘t. Not anymore!
Clem is a brilliant Australian journalist, feminist and activist. I learn so much from her books and they are very amusing as well.
But the sad reality is that the people who should read these books and gain a new perspective of things never are the ones who do.

Jari-chan Sadly, I think that's the case for many good books 😥 5mo

Amy is a force. Look up her Ted talk to see her in action. This memoir starts a little slow and felt a little incomplete, but I am feeling stunned and bereft now that I‘ve finished it. A lesson in overcoming adversity and the complexities of family trauma and love. Her perspective and positivity has left me a bit gobsmacked and deeply moved. #oznonfiction

Book club book. This was slow to start but when it did it was very entertaining! Not always in a good way! Some people live such interesting lives. I loved that a lot of this was set in a suburb of Perth, Scarborough. I‘m not sure but I think I stayed at the hotel after one of my school balls. @MrsMalaprop do you remember a hotel called ‘Mandarin gardens‘?

#audiopuzzling
I have never done puzzles while listening to books before. I don‘t generally ‘do‘ audiobooks. But I recently discovered the free audiobooks on ABCListen and enjoyed listening whilst on a road-trip to Albany, Western Australia (5 hours each way). #currentlylistening #oznonfiction

DogMomIrene 👏🏼They‘ve got you now! 🤣 I started listening to audiobooks on a road trip and I‘m a regular listener now🎧 3y
MrsMalaprop Haha @DogMomIrene 😀. Maybe that‘ll be me too. 3y

Making a start on this book of essays. In the lead-up to Australia Day on 26 Jan I try to read a book about the true history of this country from an Aboriginal perspective. This is the book I choose for 2022. #currentlyreading #oznonfiction #notadatetocelebrate

#nextup I seem to be reading about writing ✍️ a lot lately, which is interesting given I am not a creative writer 🤔 (as a school psych I write plenty at work).

But anyway, how beautiful is this cover? 😍☁️

Three people and three stories about their romantic heartbreaks. It was non-fiction and reminded me in format of Three Women. Lovely writing and I raced through it, yet I wanted more. Heartbreak is so familiar and ubiquitous, so I expected to be pulled emotionally. But I wasn‘t and I‘m not sure why. Still good though. #oznonfiction

What Days Are For | Robert Dessaix

Panpan

While recovering in a hospital bed having twice being resuscitated after a heart attack, academic, broadcaster and writer Dessaix reflects on his life, loves and travels, wondering how to live the rest of his life. The writing is lovely and there are some interesting ideas, observations and quotations in it, but I didn't much enjoy it. I think because he seemed to me awfully smug and self satisfied. I probably should have bailed. #oznonfiction

candority I really like that cover! It‘s too bad you didn‘t enjoy it though 5y
Texreader I don‘t do well with smug, self-proud authors either. 5y
