A Song for Issy Bradley
A Song for Issy Bradley | Carys Bray
7 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
WINNER OF THE AUTHORS' CLUB BEST FIRST NOVEL AWARD 2015 SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA FIRST NOVEL AWARD 2015 AND THE DESMOND ELLIOTT PRIZE 2015 Meet the Bradleys. In lots of ways, they're a normal family: Zippy is sixteen and in love for the first time; Al is thirteen and dreams of playing for Liverpool. And in some ways, they're a bit different: Seven-year-old Jacob believes in miracles. So does his dad. But these days their mum doesn't believe in anything, not even getting out of bed. How does life go on, now that Issy is gone?

Mehso-so

This wasn't really for me. It's terribly overwritten in parts but it was a group read and there was enough humour to keep me going. There were also a few moments of real heart which, for a debut, is good going.

The real interest lay in the day to day workings of Mormon life. I can't speak for how accurate a depiction this is but it does feel like this family is perhaps deeper entrenched than most.

Worth a read but keep expectations low.

? I can't imagine this is a real thing (and apologies if it is - my husband who was raised Mormon insists he's never heard of it) but it did make me laugh... a lot. "Beware the hazard of the horizontal" is my new favourite saying. ?

Scochrane26 That is a great phrase. 5y

Somewhat enjoying this so far. The writing isn't particularly strong (I'm seeing this as a good thing in this case as the book has the potential to be extremely sad) but the details on the day to day rituals of Mormon life and beliefs are fascinating (and occasionally amusing).

I'm curious but not engaged.

Up next.

I'll be honest, I normally avoid Richard and Judy book club picks but for personal reasons this intrigued me (and it's part of a WhatsApp group read I'm involved in).

TrishB I‘ll be interested in your review 👍🏻 5y

I loved The Bishop's Wife as the wife had lots of character and challenged her Mormon Bishop husband. They had a healthy respect for each other but this book is just frustrating. Claire is so pathetic as a Mormon Bishop's wife who obeys all the time. Just awful even though it is fiction. 👎🏻👎🏻
