Forrest Ganders first book of poems since his Pulitzer finalist Core Samples from the World: a startling look through loss, grief, and regret into the exquisite nature of intimacy Drawing from his experience as a translator, Forrest Gander includes in the first, powerfully elegiac section a version of a poem by the Spanish mystical poet St. John of the Cross. He continues with a long multilingual poem examining the syncretic geological and cultural history of the U.S. border with Mexico. The poems of the third sectiona moving transcription of Ganders efforts to address his mother dying of Alzheimersrise from the page like hymns, transforming slowly from reverence to revelation. Gander has been called one of our most formally restless poets, and these new poems express a characteristically tensile energy and, as one critic noted, the most eclectic diction since Hart Crane.

Mehso-so

These poems were really out there - stream-of-consciousness style writing with very vivid images throughout. Reading this was not effortless, but it was definitely stimulating. I do feel that the majority of works didn't land on any sort of solid conclusion, which inherently weakened the poet's voice for me.

Pickpick

An emotionally hefty and intellectually stirring work of challenging poetry. In particular, the poem "Ruth," about the poet caring for his mother as she deals with Alzheimer's, is resonant. Other poems in the collection are not as emotional, but intellectual and stirring. Highly recommended.

Pickpick

This is another selection from the NBA longlist for poetry. The poems about him caring for his mother, who has Alzheimer‘s, are emotional and touching. Other poems in the collection looking at the natural world are more cerebral. He focuses on the area near the US/Mexico border and uses imagery effectively to capture time and place.
