Wholly unsettling, yet incredibly captivating. Tension was palpable throughout, and the ambiguity of the ending lends an extra layer of "choose your own terror". Enjoyed it!

My only critique: The author needs to rely less on his Thesaurus - it often feels as if he chooses a random word, and finds the most obscure, complex synonym to use in its place. It was distracting and felt inaccessible, in spite of my own expansive vocabulary.

Treated myself to this old book - which details the life and lessons of a hermit, Mason Walton. His cabin once stood along my favourite local hiking trail - and I often think of him whilst tromping through the woods. Excited to read his book!

Finished this quick read last night - perhaps not the best choice for bedtime reading! ? Surreal, bizarre, and at times downright nightmarish... a new take on an old story that will leave you reeling. Definitely not for everyone!!! Fans of the movie "Mother!" will likely enjoy this one.

A short one-sitting read... a delightful collection of strangers lamenting their "what if...?" moments - straight from the annals of Craigslist. Touching, funny at times, and full of the rawness of life.

A must-read. Filled with eloquence, emotion, and power. If nothing else, read the very last piece, "Blackberries". Poems like these are blessings. ♡

DoonTheGoon Hello friends! Long time no see! I'm doing well - busy - but happy!!! I still don't have as much time for reading as I wish I did - but so it goes. I'm still hustling as a freelancer to make ends meet, which doesnt accommodate much time for books - but I'm growing my small business and finding success. I'm also engaged to the love of my life!!! ♡ Hope all of you are doing well - I'll try and check-in more often! Happy Holidays my Litsy Friends! 11mo

Big, BIG thumbs down for this one. Aside from a tone and cadence I find annoying - this book willingly (and blatantly) excludes transgender, male, or otherwise "non-bleeding" witches.
I bailed on this - but I read enough to know that this one is a pan. And while I am not in the habit of putting books in the trash - this one's fate has been sealed. I will not perpetuate this mentality by donating or otherwise paying-it-forward with this one.

I know I haven't been particularly active as of late... but today I was alerted that it's my 3-year #Litsyversary 🥳

I just wanted to say that I love the community here - and I miss using this app more. I have now been unemployed for over a year - and the struggle is REAL to hustle up the money to stay afloat. Unemployment gives me some stability, but it is continually being revoked and then reinstated. (more in comments)

DoonTheGoon As you can imagine - this is very stressful. At this point, most of my time goes into job searching, freelance design work, and running my Etsy shop (Shuttle Press & Bindery - find me!). I barely have time for self-care, let alone reading time... and it's killing me. So if you know of anyone in your life who is on unemployment, or working multiple low-income jobs to survive... understand that the hustle a'int easy. 2y
DoonTheGoon Furthermore - I know I promised a sequel to my swap "Read the Movies" at some point soon. Sadly, I don't think I've got the time to run it/make the matches. If anyone wants to take over and run the swap, please let me know! I've got everything typed up (Google form) and pretty much ready to go - I just can't commit to posting regularly and ultimately making the matches happen/keeping track of it all. If you wanna do that part - please reach out! 2y
LiteraryinLawrence So sorry you‘re struggling. I‘m unemployed and job searching too so I understand some of what you‘re going through. I hope you turn a corner soon! 2y
Gaylagal2 @DoonTheGoon Hang in there sis! I've been there several times in the last 45 years I've been working...it's so hard and isolating. Covid-19 will forever change the job market, among other things. Many people have made changes, tweaked some shit and dove right in🤙 I'm wishing you all the best and please take care of you ❤️ 2y
CarolynM Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. Good luck with the job search. I'll definitely visit your Etsy shop🙂 2y

Easily one of my favorite poets... but this collection fell very flat for me. It almost felt as if these were all partially fleshed out ideas that were pressured onto the page, rather than thoughtfully written. Sad to say, I'm disappointed - and the only thing saving this from a "Pan" is the fact that Leav has always been a favorite.

This was a surreal and emotionally weighty story. It didn't shy away from heavy lifting when it comes to trauma and identity... and instead faced their complexity head on. I couldn't read stories like this all the time, but this type of work is a keystone element of pushing for more dialogue about the difficult topics of sexuality and assault.

As much as I wanted to like this one... I didn't. The poems all seem half-baked and uninspired - the sort of thing that a student might write for a homework assignment in a class they're not invested in. I fear that this publication was more of a pandering money grab based on her celebrity status rather than a poetry book of any real merit.

Lyrical, deliberate, and often poetic... I really liked how it explored aspects of kink and sexuality without exploiting them for mass consumption. My only complaint here was pacing - a slow burn, but well worth riding the tide.

When I was younger, I was dedicated to keeping a dream journal - and did so for about 6 years. I even did one of my college thesis projects on my dreams, and the data that could be quantified from them. Sadly, I fell out of practice... but with the new month starting, I have decided to get back into it. The tagged Dreamer's Dictionary is the best I've come across so far, but the A to Z seems promising as well. We will see!

Starting something new, and off to a promising start. This author has a very poetic voice that is both stimulating and alluring... eager to see where this goes.
Additionally, the book itself has a great tactile feel to it... the pages have a unique and pleasant texture I've never encountered before.

I always love me some Buk - this was an eclectic mix of odd, and unusual works by this blue collar icon.

A charming little novella, full of heart and substance in spite of its size. Lighter fare for King, but not the least bit unwelcome.

Mistermandolin I often find I like his shorter ones more. The longer stuff sometimes seems overgrown and in urgent need of serious pruning. I wonder if he even has an editor? I just finished The Colorado Kid. Short and sweet and all the better for that. 2y
DoonTheGoon @Mistermandolin I've sensed that as well - and I seem to always find myself drawn to his short stories instead of his full-length novels. 2y
Mistermandolin @DoonTheGoon Couldn‘t agree more. The short stories are wonderful. And books like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight where he does his four-in-one collections. Novella-type things that seldom outstay their welcome. I‘m assuming you‘ve come across those? 2y
DoonTheGoon @Mistermandolin I have! I'm yet to read them though. I'm fortunate to have a King fanatic in the family - so I'm certain I can find copies to read! 2y

These poems were really out there - stream-of-consciousness style writing with very vivid images throughout. Reading this was not effortless, but it was definitely stimulating. I do feel that the majority of works didn't land on any sort of solid conclusion, which inherently weakened the poet's voice for me.

Finally finished this one today - a memoir written by my very own landlord. It was an interesting experience reading the story of how she came to be the woman I know today. In spite of a few minor gripes with timing and repetitiveness, this was an inspiring and insightful read. Even if you don't know her, her actions in support of feminism and equality ring true to the battles still being fought today.

What an odd one. This is one of those books that just seems to continually escalate with tension. The chapters are so brief (in many instances, less than a page), so this reads at a pace that almost feels unstoppable. There's more here than meets the eye... and I'll likely be thinking about it for the next few days. If conspiracy and noir are of interest, I'd check this one out!
